Since the country gained independence in 1965, family and population policies have been integral to her nation-building strategies. The chapters discuss the changes in population compositions, family structures, relations, and values among major ethnic groups. The ISA was founded in\u00a01949 under the auspices of UNESCO. The goal of the\u00a0ISA is to represent sociologists\u00a0everywhere, regardless of their school of thought,\u00a0scientific approaches or ideological\u00a0opinion, and to advance sociological knowledge throughout the world. Its members\u00a0come from 167 countries.<\/p>\r\n<p>The Research Committee on\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.rc06-isa.org\/about-rc06\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Family Research (RC06)<\/a>\u00a0was founded in 1959. The purpose of the Committee on Family Research is to encourage family research of high quality within and between countries.<\/p>\r\n<p>The Research Committee on\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.isa-sociology.org\/en\/research-networks\/research-committees\/rc41-sociology-of-population\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sociology of Population (RC41)<\/a> was established in 1988. It is concerned with how sociological phenomena affect population structure and processes and vice versa. By focusing on integrative studies, the work of the Institute will go beyond public policies and also deal with matters of technological importance. The Institute will complement existing NUS programmes that already have a significant Asian component.
