Motivation can be of different types, nature (intrinsic vs. extrinsic) and levels (or strengths), some of which are more significant for effective language learning, than others. Identity refers to the dynamic representations of self that a language learner adopts, constructs, maintains or negotiate, in relation to his social, cultural and political contexts. Autonomy in learning is the active involvement in and willingness to take charge of one’s learning as well as the capability to do so.
What are the interrelations between the motivation, identity and autonomy? What is the impact on motivation when language learners are encouraged to speak of themselves, and to express and engage their own identities through the language? At the same time, it is well established that motivation has an influence on the autonomy of language learners, but what is the nature of this influence and to what extent are these two notions linked? Next, how and to what extent does enabling foreign language learners to ‘speak as themselves’ in the target language with their own identities promote language learner autonomy? Or can identity be seen as a goal or product of autonomous learning?
CLaSIC 2018 provides a platform for researchers, scholars and practitioners in foreign language education for an invigorating discourse on theoretical conceptions and approaches, research insights, and practical experiences from the various sub-fields and sub-themes listed below, as they pertain to motivation, identity and autonomy in foreign language teaching and learning.

Sub-Themes

The Organising Committee thus invites proposals for paper and poster presentations on related to the conference theme:

Theories of Language Learning Motivation

Motivational Strategies for Teachers and Learners

Culture, Self and Identity in Language Education

Motivation and Identity in Second Language Acquisition

Learner and Teacher Autonomy

Learning Orientations and Learning Styles

Self-regulation and Metacognition

Assessment and evaluation

Technology in Support of Motivation and Autonomy

Instructional Approaches and Methods

Curriculum and Materials Development

Assessment and Evaluation

Teacher Education and Development

Research Methods and Approaches

Other Relevant Topics

Click here to submit your proposal online.

    About ClaSIC

About CLaSIC

CLaSIC is a biennial conference organised by the Centre for Language Studies of the National University of Singapore, and aims to bring together academics, researchers and professionals from Asia and beyond for a productive and meaningful exchange of insights, experiences, views and perspectives on current and future developments in foreign language teaching and learning. The conference serves as a platform for participants to report on current research and practices in foreign language education and related disciplines. Since the inaugural conference in December 2004, CLaSIC has been a resounding success, drawing researchers and professionals from all over the world. Leading scholars in foreign language education, applied linguistics and second language acquisition have featured as keynote speakers, among them Anna Uhl Chamot, William Littlewood, Richard Schmidt, Elaine Tarone, Amy Tsui, Michael Byram, Claire Kramsch, Rod Ellis and Michael Levy.

Six scholarly volumes with selected papers from CLaSIC 2004, 2006, 2008, 2010, 2012 and 2014 have been published by the international publishing house, De Gruyter Mouton (Boston and Berlin). They are titled: Foreign Language Teaching in Asia and Beyond: Current Perspectives and Future Directions, Processes and Process-Orientation in Foreign Language Teaching and Learning, Media in Foreign Language Teaching and Learning, Perspectives on Individual Characteristics and Foreign Language Education; Culture and Foreign Language Education: Insights from Research and Implications for the Practice; and New Perspectives on the Development of Communicative and Related Competence in Foreign Language Education.

Asia-Pacific Symposium for the Teaching of Asian Languages

In 2008, CLaSIC hosted for the first time a symposium on Asian languages teaching jointly with the Australian National University.

Sub Themes

Theories of Language Learning Motivation

Motivational Strategies for Teachers and Learners

Culture, Self and Identity in Language Education

Motivation and Identity in Second Language Acquisition

Learner and Teacher Autonomy

Learning Orientations and Learning Styles

Self-regulation and Metacognition

Assessment and evaluation

Technology in Support of Motivation and Autonomy

Instructional Approaches and Methods

Curriculum and Materials Development

Assessment and Evaluation

Teacher Education and Development

Research Methods and Approaches

Other Relevant Topics

Proposal Submission

The CLaSIC 2018 Organising Committee invites proposals for paper and poster presentations related to the conference theme.
