In language education, communicative competence has long been identified as a major objective of learning. Reflecting the intricacies of human interactions and communication, communicative competence is a highly complex construct encompassing an array of sub-competencies such as linguistic skills and proficiencies, knowledge of sociocultural and sociopragmatic codes, and the ability to engage in textual and conversational discourse. Findings from research in second language acquisition, linguistics, cognitive psychology and other related disciplines have also pointed to the significance of other factors that can contribute to the attainment of communicative competence or are themselves desirable objectives of foreign language learning. These include such notions as autonomy, learning and metacognitive competence, intercultural competence, digital literacy, and teacher/learner beliefs and assumptions.

CLaSIC 2014 provides a platform for researchers, scholars, practitioners and developers in the area of foreign language education to share and discuss findings and insights pertaining to the role and development of communicative competence, as well as other critical forms of knowledge, skills and competencies for foreign language teaching and learning.

Sub-Themes

The Organising Committee thus invites proposals for paper and poster presentations on knowledge, skills and competencies related to the following areas of foreign language education:

Four skills of language learning

Grammar and vocabulary acquisition

Communicative competence

Culture-related competencies

Learner strategies and learner autonomy

Technology and language education

Pragmatics in language learning

Curriculum development and syllabus design

Assessment and evaluation

Teacher education

Motivational strategies

Beliefs and assumptions

Click here to submit your proposal online.

    About ClaSIC

About CLaSIC

CLaSIC is a biennial conference organised by the Centre for Language Studies (CLS) of the National University of Singapore (NUS), and aims to bring together academics, researchers and professionals from Asia and beyond for a productive and meaningful exchange of insights, experiences, views and perspectives on current and future developments in foreign language teaching and learning. The conference serves as a platform for participants to report on current research and practices in foreign language education and related disciplines. Since the inaugural conference in December 2004, CLaSIC has been a resounding success, drawing researchers and professionals from all over the world. Leading scholars in foreign language education, applied linguistics and second language acquisition have featured as keynote speakers, among them Anna Uhl Chamot, William Littlewood, Richard Schmidt, Elaine Tarone, Amy Tsui, Michael Byram, and Claire Kramsch.

Four scholarly volumes with selected papers from CLaSIC 2004, 2006, 2008 and 2010 have been published by the international publishing house, De Gruyter Mouton (Boston and Berlin). The last of these four volumes is titled Perspectives on Individual Characteristics and Foreign Language Education. A fifth volume with selected papers from CLaSIC 2012 is currently in preparation.

Asia-Pacific Symposium for the Teaching of Asian Languages

In 2008, CLaSIC hosted for the first time a symposium on Asian languages teaching jointly with the Australian National University. The symposium has since been expanded and involved further reputable partners such as Arizona State University, Chinese University of Hong Kong, University of Hawai’i, La Trobe University, University of Madison-Wisconsin and Tokyo University of Foreign Studies in 2010 and 2012.

Feedback on the last four conferences

The committee has done a fantastic job and I’ve found all staff very helpful and generous.

Proposal Submission

(Proposal submissions are now extended to 7 June 2014.)

The CLaSIC 2014 Organising Committee invites proposals for paper and poster presentations related to the conference theme.
