Minor Programmes<\/h2>\r\n

CLS offers two minor programmes: the Minor in Language Studies and the Minor in Multilingual Communication.<\/p>\r\n

Students are allowed to declare both minors, subject to\u00a0NUS double-counting policy<\/u><\/a>.<\/p>\r\n

Minor in Language Studies <\/a> Minor in Multilingual Communication <\/a> Minor in Language Studies<\/p>\r\n

The Minor in Language Studies is an\u00a0open minor<\/u><\/a>\u00a0offered to all NUS undergraduates who are interested in studying one of the languages offered by the Centre for Language Studies (CLS).<\/p>\r\n

How to declare<\/u><\/strong>:
Students must declare to the Home Faculty\/School no later than the end of the fifth semester of study.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Overview Requirements<\/td>\r\nTo earn a Minor in Language Studies, students must accumulate 20 units, made up of:\r\n

\u00b7 either 20 units (i.e. 5 courses) from the same language, or<\/p>\r\n

\u00b7 16 units (i.e. 4 courses) from the same language\u00a0plus\u00a04 units from recognised courses from that language track.<\/p>\r\n

The accumulated units must include a Level 6\u00a0or higher-level course (to ensure that all students graduating with a Language Studies Minor attain at least an advanced level of competency).\u00a0Please note that\u00a0the offering of a Level 6\u00a0or higher-level language course is subject to the discretion of CLS.<\/p>\r\n

Standard course prerequisites and preclusions apply.<\/p>\r\n

The minor is available in 12 languages:<\/p>\r\n

2. Bahasa Indonesia<\/p>\r\n

3. Chinese<\/p>\r\n

4. French<\/p>\r\n

5. German<\/p>\r\n

6. Hindi<\/p>\r\n

11. Thai<\/p>\r\n

Important Notes<\/td>\r\n1. In order to take Level 1000 CLS language courses, students must not have prior knowledge of the language (written or oral). If they have prior knowledge, they may take a placement test<\/a> to determine the appropriate level (if any). Placement tests exempt prerequisites, but do not waive units.\r\n

2. Students with prior knowledge of one language may not be able to fulfill the requirements of the minor in that language, depending on the placement outcome. Nonetheless, they may consider pursuing the minor in that language if feasible, or the minor in another language, or the Minor in Multilingual Communication.<\/p>\r\n3. Up to 8 units from approved exchange courses that are mapped to CLS course equivalents<\/a> (same course codes) may be counted towards the minor. Double-counting<\/a> of courses follows NUS policy of up to 8 units.<\/td>\r\n<\/tr>\r\n

Minor in Multilingual Communication<\/p>\r\n

The Minor in Multilingual Communication is an open minor<\/a> offered to all NUS undergraduates who are interested in studying two languages offered by the Centre for Language Studies (CLS) (hereafter “Language A” and “Language B”). The minor will be launched in AY2026\/2027 Semester 1.<\/p>\r\n

How to declare<\/u><\/strong>:
Students must declare to the Home Faculty\/School no later than the end of the fifth semester of study.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
Overview Requirements<\/td>\r\nTo earn a Minor in Multilingual Communication, students must accumulate 20 units, made up of:\r\n

\u00b7 12 units (i.e. 3 courses) in Language A, selected from one of the languages offered, including the Level 4 course or a higher-level course<\/p>\r\n

AND<\/p>\r\n

\u00b7 8 units (i.e. 2 courses) in Language B, selected from one of the other languages, including the Level 2 course or a higher-level course<\/p>\r\n

Standard course prerequisites and preclusions apply.<\/p>\r\n

Language A<\/strong> may be selected from languages with Level 4 or higher offerings currently available:<\/p>\r\n

12. Vietnamese<\/p>\r\nThe availability of languages that can be taken as Language A and Language B reflects course availability rather than the value or importance of the languages. Offerings are subject to periodic review.<\/td>\r\n<\/tr>\r\n

Important Notes<\/td>\r\n1. In order to take Level 1000 CLS language courses, students must not have prior knowledge of the language (written or oral). If they have prior knowledge, they may take a placement test<\/a>\u00a0to determine the appropriate level (if any). Placement tests exempt prerequisites, but do not waive units.\r\n

2. Students who are currently reading CLS courses are allowed to declare the minor. Those who have already declared the Minor in Language Studies may switch to the new minor or pursue both concurrently, subject to NUS double-counting policy<\/a>. Students studying both minors cannot use the same language as Language A. For example, if a student pursues the Minor in German Language Studies, they can only take German as Language B in the Minor in Multilingual Communication.<\/p>\r\n

3. Students may only be awarded one Minor in Multilingual Communication, even if they complete courses across more than two languages.<\/p>\r\n4. Up to 8 units from approved exchange courses that are mapped to CLS course equivalents<\/a> (same course codes) may be counted towards the minor. Double-counting of courses follows NUS policy of up to 8 units.<\/td>\r\n<\/tr>\r\n
