Data Storytelling for Businesses
SSG Course Code: TGS-2022011539 (In-Person Class)
SSG Course Code: TGS-2022011544 (e-learning)
The purpose of this course is to take its participants from data interpretation to data communication. Telling stories with data is core to many businesses, from marketing to research analytics, and from business to sports. But it is also important to align data presentations to objectives and audiences. A cluttered or confusing chart can lose people's interest and obscure the central story in the data. In this course, through data simulations, activities, and projects, we will first learn how to ask the right questions from the prepared data and identify actionable insights. Then, we will learn the best practices for presenting data and insights together, and how to tweak narratives to suit different purposes and audiences.
Course Outline
• Identify the business questions that can be answered with data
• Use dashboards, data simulations, and case studies to identify important insights from data
• Identify when and how to use each type of chart to illustrate your data and your story.
• Identify how to tailor your story to your audience
Participants will be called to think about the story in their data before they design the visualizations, and to consider the audience and the narrative while they decide on the visuals. The ability to effectively communicate data stories with visualization is now an essential skill required in newsrooms, businesses, governments and research firms alike.
