Dr. Gary Lam Yu Hin, Assistant Professor, Department of Educational Psychology, The Chinese University of Hong Kong

Dr. Gary Lam Yu Hin is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Educational Psychology at The Chinese University of Hong Kong. His work focuses on fostering a better understanding of the neurodivergent community and promoting their well-being across the lifespan. His research areas include autism, post-school transition, behavioral and mental health, critical disability studies, and qualitative methodologies. He is a registered Educational/School Psychologist in Hong Kong and the United States who has extensive clinical experience working with children, young adults, and their families and teachers in school and community settings.

Abstract

Unlike traditional public education programs, the Human Library (HL) is an innovative approach that engages “readers” from the public in critical dialogues with human “books” from marginalized communities, offering insights into their lived experiences. While HL has been widely adopted by educational and community organizations worldwide, its research base and implementation guidance remain limited. This seminar will first present a systematic review that synthesized the empirical literature on the implementation, processes, and outcomes of HL research. It will then report on a participatory realist evaluation of a HL project aimed at promoting public understanding and reducing stigma of autism in Hong Kong. Lastly, it will discuss the implications of adopting HL to improve social awareness and support advocacy efforts for diverse communities.
