Abstract

Ken's talk will begin with a discussion on the longevity revolution, and the quick acceleration of life expectancy over the past several decades. From there, Ken will bring into discussion the measures of healthy life expectancy—the years lived in good health compared to those lived in poor health—to highlight the ways in which Americans are falling behind comparable to peer nations and to Singapore in particular. Ken will then move on to discuss some potential causes for this decline in the United States, specifically detailing issues like social connection and civic engagement, providing examples of American cities and towns that highlight how these factors can make immense differences in the wellbeing of their citizens. Finally, Ken will conclude his talk with the lessons of social connection and healthy life expectancy that he has learned on his recent travels to Korea and Japan.
