Graduate Programmes
The Department of Communications and New Media offers three research-based graduate studies programme: Master of Arts, Doctor of Philosophy (Communications and New Media), and Doctor of Philosophy (Cultural Studies in Asia).
Master of Arts
The Master of Arts research programme offers strong training in communication research for students who wish to pursue research oriented careers or further graduate studies. Students have up to three years to complete the programme. Local students can either pursue the programme full-time or part-time, but international students must pursue the programme as full-time candidates.
To be awarded the Master of Arts degree, students must complete all required coursework modules satisfactorily and pass a thesis (maximum 30,000 words) examination before the end of their candidature.
Doctor of Philosophy (Communications and New Media)
The Doctor of Philosophy in Communications and New Media programme is a rigorous, research intensive programme for students who wish to pursue a career as a communication scholar or as a professional industry/industry/NGO based researcher. The programme is highly suitable for students who have a strong research interest in media studies, communication management, interactive media design, computational communication, political communication, and internet governance.
Students have up to five years to complete the programme. Local students can either pursue the programme full-time or part-time, but international students must pursue the programme as full-time candidates.
To be awarded the PhD degree, students must complete all required coursework modules satisfactorily, pass a thesis (maximum 80,000 words) examination, and successfully defend their thesis orally before the end of their candidature.
Doctor of Philosophy (Cultural Studies in Asia)
The Cultural Studies in Asia (CSA) Doctor of Philosophy programme is a rigorous, research intensive programme for students who wish to pursue a career as a cultural studies scholar or as a professional industry/industry/NGO based researcher. The programme is highly suitable for students who have a strong research interest in cultural studies and digital humanities.
Students have up to five years to complete the programme. Local students can either pursue the programme full-time or part-time, but international students must pursue the programme as full-time candidates.
