PhD - Communications and New Media

The department offers a PhD programme in Communications and New Media, on a full-time and part-time basis. International students on a student's pass can pursue their studies on a full-time basis only. The maximum period of candidature for both full-time and part-time candidates in the PhD programme is 60 months.

All graduate students are required to take the following research modules:
NM6101 - Advanced Theories in Communications and New Media
NM6103 - Quantitative Research Methods in Communications and New Media
NM6104 - Qualitative Research Methods in Communications and New Media
NM6770 - Graduate Research Seminar

In addition, students will need to read four elective modules (if enrolled from Aug 2019), or five elective modules (if enrolled before Aug 2019).

Application Information

Application is open from 16 May to 1 November every year. There is only one intake per academic year, which commences in August.

Applicants should submit their application on the NUS Graduate Admission System (GDA3) (click here for the system user guide) with the following documents:

  1. A completed graduate application form
  2. Your undergraduate and graduate scrolls and transcripts
  3. TOEFL or IELTS reports (excluding native English speakers, and those whose undergraduate education was conducted in English)
    Test Requirements
    TOEFL Internet-based Test (iBT) Minimum score of 85
    with 22 for the writing section
    TOEFL ITP Plus for China Minimum score of 590
    with 60 for the writing section
    TOEFL Computer-based Test (CBT) Minimum score of 237
    IELTS Minimum score of 6.0
  4. GRE report, with an aggregate minimum score of 320 for the Verbal Reasoning and Quantitative Reasoning sections and a minimum score of 3.5 for the Analytical Section.
  5. Two recommendation letters
  6. A well-written research proposal of approximately 1000 words. It should indicate the proposed area and topic of research, indicating knowledge of work done in that field, intended methodology, and a brief bibliography.
