Students earn academic credits in fulfilment of their Bachelor’s programme when they participate in the Compulsory Internship Programme.

There are two windows for internship per year, following the academic calendars of each corresponding year (ie. AY24/25). The dates to begin internship follow a strict schedule, which typically starts on:

2nd Week of January

1st Week of August

of each year, and each internship last between 16 or 20 weeks, extensions will be negotiated between potential employers and their respective interns.

ALLOWANCE

The department recommends a minimum monthly allowance of S$1000/-. No CPF contributions are required. Please refer to CPF’s FAQ (‘Students’) for more information. An Internship Letter of Support may be requested from the department.

Singapore enterprises are also eligible for up to 70% funding support on the monthly internship stipend via Enterprise Singapore. More information can be found here.

ROLE OF EMPLOYERS

When a student joins the company, the employer is invited to appoint a workplace supervisor to guide and review the progress of internship. For CIP, the workplace supervisor will need to evaluate and provide feedback on the student’s performance at the end of internship. Supervisors are also required to provide a testimonial for the student as part of the evaluation. The workplace supervisor’s feedback accounts for a significant part of the grade that the student will receive at the end of the internship.

INTERNSHIP APPLICATION PROCESS

Employers are to post their internship positions on NUS’s job portal, Talent Connect. Students will then see the jobs on offer, apply for them and send in their resumes via the portal. Employers are able to post job openings, receive resumes, arrange for interviews and tests, and finally, make job offers – all on this one platform.

As this is a credit-bearing internship, the department requires all internship offers to be made on TalentConnect.

STUDENTS TO BE ALLOWED TIME-OFF / LEAVE POLICY

While working at organisations, a small number of CNM students might be required to fulfil their academic coursework and will need to return to school to attend a handful of evening classes. While CNM strives to minimise disruption to students’ internship and the organisation’s workflow by organising required classes in the evening, we sincerely ask for your understanding on this matter.

CIP students would need to attend a maximum of 14 evening classes throughout the compulsory internship period; the department sincerely hopes that your company will release students earlier on dates when they have evening classes back in campus.

Students may occasionally also be required to return to school for exams in the morning or afternoon. We thus seek the company’s flexibility in allowing students time off to take their exams.

While we understand that different agencies and companies have different policies, where possible we advise a pro-rated leave policy after 3 months for the student interns.

REGISTER TO BE AN EMPLOYER

Employers who are keen to offer internships can register their internship vacancies in the semester prior to the internship period. Outside the registration period, we also welcome employers who want to offer internship positions to CNM students. To register internship positions, please contact the CIP Team.

CONTACT

For enqueries, please email the CIP Team at cnminternship@nus.edu.sg.

      Employment Guidelines

EMPLOYMENT GUIDELINES FOR EMPLOYERS

As part of the Communications and New Media internship, employers should read through this guide and be aware of the following:

1. Note that this is a graded internship. 30% of the student’s grade will be determined by the Supervisor ‘s Evaluation, to be filled in by the student intern’s supervisor. This evaluation will be kept confidential between the organization and NUS.

2. Weekend work should be compensated with time off in lieu.

3. Overtime should be aligned with ad-hoc project lifecycle and not the norm, on a daily basis.

4. A small number of students may need to be let off at 6pm for evening classes without pay deduction. Students might make up for it by starting work earlier or ending work later on another day.

5. Students should be given an employment contract that clearly lists their Key Employment Terms.

6. Students who have interned for longer than 3 months are strongly advised to have pro-rated sick leave and annual leave.

7. The organisations mentoring our students must ensure that the internship allows for learning and growth on the students’ part.

8. Employers are advised to offer students $1000/-. A lower amount may be offered but it should be communicated clearly to the student.

9. Currently, students are strictly not allowed to take overseas internships to fulfil NM3550Y.

10. Employers are advised to contact the CIP Team as the first protocol if any problems arise during the internship.

11. Students are not allowed to take unpaid internships for the programme.

12. Only full-time internship are allowed for the programme.

      TalentConnect

TO POST A JOB

To create an internship position, see the following:

Sign up and login to TalentConnect.

Go to ‘Jobs & Internships’ tab > ‘Job/Internship Postings’ > ‘Create a Job’.

Fill in the job details and select the following:

Position Type: Faculty Internships – Arts & Social Sciences

Restrict Applications/Activate Screening: ‘Yes‘ should be selected.

Experiential Learning Placement Type: FASS – (NM3550C) Communications & New Media – Compulsory Internship Programme

Work Term: Academic Year 2024/2025 Sem 2 (Dec’24 – Apr/May’24)

Ensure that start date is on or before 6 January and the end date is on or after 25 April/23 May.

Are interns allowed to take time-off to read evening modules on-campus?
