It’s one thing to possess various hard and soft skills, but it’s another to have a track record to exhibit those skills. Internships provide job applicants with a documented work experience and the opportunity to network with potential co-workers and future employers in a setting in which their performance and work attitude may be directly observed. Consequently, internships are often a vehicle for companies to scout for talent; and conversely, for interns to find out more about prospective employers.

Not all temporary work counts as internships. To qualify as an internship, a temporary position should (1) emphasize on-the-job training, (2) include intentional learning goals for the interns, and (3) be closely supervised. Internships may be paid or unpaid. You can see the NUS guidelines relating to internships here.

Because we care about our students’ future career success, FASS has made space for an internship component in our curriculum. But opportunities for internships are also offered by the University (University Managed Internship Programme) and individual Departments within FASS (Department Managed Academic Internship Programmes).

Students are advised to watch the CFG internship preparation video found here. Before embarking on an internship, ALL STUDENTS are required to watch Video 3.

 Department Managed Academic Internship Programmes

The Department holds a briefing for all interested second year and above major students at the beginning of Semester 1 of each academic year. Students will need to submit their CV and transcript for consideration, with the Department contacting potential internship organisations thereafter for internships during the summer holidays of the following year. Successful students will be informed by March of the following year, whereupon they will need to submit an application to read the internship module during the Special Term. Unsuccessful students may still source for their own internships subject to approval by the Department. Students will spend at least 6 weeks with the internship organisation and will need to submit an Internship Report upon completion of their internship. They will be graded based on this report, together with the intern evaluation report from their supervisor at the organisation, and observations by their faculty supervisor.

Students need to satisfy the following before they are eligible to apply for the internship programme:

Full-time Student

Chinese Studies / Chinese Language Major

Read and passed a minimum of 80 units before beginning the internship (minimum of 24 units from Chinese Studies / Chinese Language)

Have not done any department internship module before

Additional pre-requisites may apply for certain employers

Some organisations our students have previously interned with including the following:

Mediacorp

Ministry of Education (Mother Tongue Languages Branch, Curriculum Planning and Development Division)

National Heritage Board

Singapore Centre for Chinese Language

Berries World

 Faculty Managed Internship Programme

FASS Internship Programme (FASSIP).
