As an intern in the weather forecast department, I was exposed to the daily operations of forecasters as well as the procedures involved in working with private clients. I was given the chance to create my own daily forecast reports, giving me the experience of working with the company’s internal programmes. The interns were also given challenging problem-solving tasks weekly that allowed us to pick up important skill sets such as coding. The friendly staff often gave tours around the warehouse and labs, giving us a quick peek into the technology used, and this allowed us to see how geography is used in day-to-day real-life operations in a Geotech company. There was so much to learn every day, with many experiences that I would not have gained within the confines of a classroom. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful, creating a wonderful work environment. I am thankful and grateful for this learning opportunity made possible by the Geography Department.

Faith Lee Zifei
Fugro, 2019

Interning at ACRES was definitely a meaningful and fun experience, especially when I was given the opportunity to work with such a friendly and dedicated team.

Interning at ACRES was definitely a meaningful and fun experience, especially when I was given the opportunity to work with such a friendly and dedicated team. Everyone was very welcoming and it was heartwarming to see all of them working towards helping and protecting wildlife in their own ways. Interning there gave me a better understanding to how a non-profit organization works and how truly important it is to have the support of donors, volunteers, the public, and how only collectively can we make greater changes and influences.

Apart from giving me a deeper insight into the issues surrounding the preservation of our environment and wildlife, my involvement in roadshows and educational talks helped me learn how to better interact and engage with the public (including students). Helping to plan awareness campaigns and fundraising events improved my planning and organisational skills. I was also pleasantly surprised when I was given the chance to help care for the animals housed at ACRES, and witness the rescue team in action by following them on their rescue missions.

Lynette Goh
ACRES, 2018

This internship has given me the opportunity to apply GIS in the real world context and realise its potential in generating useful (spatial) information which can be utilised for planning purposes for the benefit of the relevant authorities.

I spent my 2015 summer break at the SLA’s Geospatial Division where I conducted data processing and analysis on the library usage in Singapore using Geographic Information Systems (GIS).
