Today, the Geog Soc (pronounced \u201cJEOG-SOCK\u201d), as it is affectionately referred to, still serves as the umbrella body under which students reading Geography can find both academic and social support. Just as trees stand firmly rooted while continuing to branch outwards and upwards, the 60th MC aspires to remain grounded in the society\u2019s 60 year legacy, while reaching upwards for new opportunities and growth. \u201c<span style=\"color: #339966;\">Arbor<\/span>\u201d embodies the idea of remaining rooted in history, cultivating growth, and creating shelter for our community, both for society members and the Geographical community at large.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<div class=\"fl-module fl-module-rich-text fl-node-kip9sa8y1j45\" data-node=\"kip9sa8y1j45\">\n\t<div class=\"fl-module-content fl-node-content\">\n\t\t<div class=\"fl-rich-text\">\n\t<p>The motto \u201c<span style=\"color: #339966;\">Arbor<\/span>\u201d represents the\u00a0<u>three core missions<\/u>\u00a0of the 60th, which together embody our role as the \u201c<span style=\"color: #339966;\"><strong>Arbor<\/strong><\/span>\u201d of the community.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The first mission: <strong>\u201cRooted in legacy, nourished by the past.\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Like the\u00a0<span style=\"color: #339966;\"><strong>roots of a tree anchoring it to the earth<\/strong><\/span>, the 60th Management Committee begins its journey grounded in the memory and accomplishments of the past 59 committees. Our roots represent the foundations of dedication, commitment, and resilience that the previous members have laid. They remind us to remain connected to our shared history and to\u00a0<span style=\"color: #339966;\"><strong>draw inspiration and nourishment<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0from the values of those who came before us, ensuring that the society\u2019s growth remains steady and sustainable.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The second mission: \u201c<strong>Branching outwards, strengthened together.<\/strong>\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Like\u00a0<span style=\"color: #339966;\"><strong>branches that weather wind and storm yet continue to grow<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0into the unknown, the 60th MC will inevitably face trials throughout our term. These challenges, however, are not setbacks but opportunities, moments where we go beyond our comfort zones, learn resilience, and discover new strengths within ourselves and with one another. Just as\u00a0<span style=\"color: #339966;\"><strong>branches of a tree are interconnected<\/strong><\/span>, we as the 60th MC will continue to support, uplift, and grow with one another, fostering bonds that will extend across the NUS Geography community. Through these shared experiences, we hope to emerge stronger, more united, and prepared to carry our community forward for another sixty years.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The third mission: \u201c<strong>Sheltering growth, fostering community.<\/strong>\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The canopy of a tree offers\u00a0<span style=\"color: #339966;\"><strong>shade and protection<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0to all beneath it, creating a space for life to thrive. Similarly, the 60th MC aims to provide a supportive and nurturing environment for our members and the wider Geography community. Beyond individual growth, we seek to foster bonds of friendship, unity, and shared purpose. The Society is also a member of NUSSU Congress of Societies, which aims to increase students\u2019 welfare and improve communication between NUSSU, societies and students. Thus the Society serves to represent the interests of its members.<\/p>\n<p>The Society has approximately 600 members comprising students from all years. The Management Committee that is elected during the Annual General Meeting organises activities and implements initiatives for the members during their term.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div collaboration with the Ministry of Education (MOE) to challenge and pique the interest of secondary school students. It aims to ignite the passion of secondary school students to engage geography in their everyday lives through interactive components that involve both academic and non-academic elements to stimulate their creativity.<\/p>\n<p>NUS Geographers get the chance to develop themes, question papers, and even chart the direction of designated components. If you are someone who likes hands-on activities, Geography majors can also take on the opportunity to execute the event itself as well. specially curated for potential Geography majors and is usually held in early August right after the first GE1101E lecture. At the Welcome Tea, there will be an opening address by the Head of Department to officially welcome you to the Geography department, the introduction to the Geography Department, followed by a short presentation by Geogsoc. At this event, first year students can take the chance to clarify doubts with regards to the Geography curriculum, modules offered and certain administrative affairs.
