Single Major [B.A. (Hons.)]

To major in Japanese Studies, students need to:

• Pass JS1101E. This will be counted towards the Faculty Core or UE requirements.
• Pass at least 84 units of JS courses or JS-recognised courses or LAJ courses which include the following:
  1. JS2101
  2. JS3101
  3. LAJ1201 *
  4. LAJ2201 *
  5. LAJ2202 *
  6. LAJ2203 *
  7. LAJ3201 or LAJ3203 *
  8. LAJ3202 or LAJ3204 or LAJ3205 *
  9. a minimum of 60 units at level-3000 (including JS3101 and LAJ level-3000) or higher, with:
     1. a minimum of 40 units at level-4000 or higher
     2. a maximum of 2 level-5000 JS courses (subject to department's approval)

Notes:

• To declare an Honours track, students must have completed 110 units, including 44 units in the Major, with a GPA of 3.2 and above.
• The Honours Thesis (15 units) is optional. To qualify for the Honours Thesis, students must complete 110 units including 44 units of JS major requirements with a minimum GPA of 3.5.
• Students who do not attempt the Honours Thesis will read level-4000 courses to fulfil the Honours Requirements.
• Students who may also read a level-4000 Independent Studies Course (5 units). The level-4000 Independent Studies Course carries a pre-requisite of 100 units completed, including 44 units in the Major, with a minimum GPA of 3.2. It precludes the Honours Thesis.
• All level-4000 courses carry a general pre-requisite of having completed 80 units, including 28 units in the Major, with a minimum GPA of 3.2 OR being on the Honours Track (some level-4000 courses may have different pre-requisites).

* Notes:

• Students who are waived from LAJ course(s) should read JS course(s) to make up the minimum units required.
• LAJ4203 and LAJ4205 cannot be counted towards JS major requirements.
