The Department is thrilled to announce that recent graduate Sarah Tan Jia Min received second prize in the Ivan Morris Memorial Prize competition.

The prize is administered by the British Association for Japanese Studies. It is open to any undergraduate or graduate student, based on a thesis or dissertation. Sarah won for her Honour's Thesis, "Old age in the past, the past in old age: examining how the media, state and individual coped with the elderly and aging in early Meiji Japan (1872-1878)." The reviewer called the thesis a "really fascinating examination of how care for the elderly has its traditions in the past. Beautifully written, with a clear, rational and convincing argument that carries the reader along. Meticulously researched, and introducing new diary material to an English-speaking readership."
