Without hesitation, she clicked on \u201cMalay Studies\u201d on the online application form.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI found that\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/fass.nus.edu.sg\/mls\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Malay Studies<\/a>\u00a0in NUS was most relevant to my personal experiences and would help me to make sense of my own society,\u201d said Hikmah, who also selected\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/fass.nus.edu.sg\/socanth\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sociology<\/a>\u00a0as her minor.<\/p>\n<p>Both these courses combined to give her new insights as well as learning tools, enabling her to challenge the status quo by digging deeper to examine the root causes of the key issues affecting her community.<\/p>\n<p>With her newfound knowledge, Hikmah decided to share her observations by writing various commentaries that were published in Berita Mediacorp, the Malay news arm of Mediacorp.<\/p>\n<p>Her commentaries have explored topics such as religion and its role in social development programmes, as well as undergraduate education \u2013 both in relation to the Malay-Muslim community.<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>Turning knowledge into action\u00a0<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"pp_gridcontainer_gallery  pp_moduleblock pp-images-module pp-images-module-nocarousel pp-images-module-nocarousel-photo-2\">\n<div class=\"pp-gallery-container clearboth\">\n<div>\n<div class=\"gallery_thumbnail_single\"><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"2022 0707 - Hikmah-2\" src=\"https:\/\/content.presspage.com\/uploads\/2580\/1920_20220707-hikmah-2.jpg?10000\" alt=\"2022 0707 - Hikmah-2\" \/><\/div>\n<div class=\"pp_gallery_labels_container\">\n<div class=\"pp_gallery_label pp_gallery_description \">Hikmah (front row, left) with her friends from the Malay Studies Society.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"ppmodule_textblock pp_moduleblock\">\n<div class=\"text_companyprofile\">\n<div class=\"pp-overflow-hidden pp-min-width-5\">\n<p>Hikmah also sought to make an impact within the university. In 2020, she became the President of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nusmalaystudies.wixsite.com\/malaystudiessociety\/about\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NUS Malay Studies Society<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Driven by her passion to raise awareness of socio-economic issues and policies, she organised several forums where speakers were invited to share about a wide range of issues pertaining to the development of the Malay community \u2013 extending to topics such as gender and sexuality.<\/p>\n<p>She also joined\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nus.campuslabs.com\/engage\/organization\/nus-interfaith\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NUS Interfaith<\/a>, eventually becoming a member of the executive committee and organising events on and off campus, as she believed strongly in the need to promote a better understanding of other religions.<\/p>\n<p>Beyond her activities on campus, she was recognised with a nomination as \u201cSahabat Sastera\u201d (Friend of Malay Literature) by the Malay Language Council in 2021, for promoting the value of Malay literature. She is also working on a book with the other nominees on this topic.<\/p>\n<p>Hikmah is set to play an integral role in shaping the Malay media landscape too, as she now sits on an advisory panel for Malay media at Mediacorp. When she first arrived at NUS, Hikmah was taken aback by the huge class size and distance between the student and the lecturer. It was a far cry from her Madrasah experience.<\/p>\n<p>Thankfully, Hikmah made friends with a number of helpful seniors. With their support, Hikmah found her place in NUS. \u201cBeing with them helped me to transition to university life,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Coming from a large family of six, financial struggles were another hurdle in Hikmah\u2019s education path. For a period of time during the height of the pandemic, she had to work as a swab assistant to help her family out \u2013 all while keeping up with her studies.<\/p>\n<p>Fortunately, a MUIS Zaakat financial assistance scheme and the<a href=\"https:\/\/nus.edu.sg\/oam\/scholarships\/freshmen-singapore-citizens\/nus-merit-scholarship\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u00a0NUS Merit Scholarship<\/a>\u00a0gave Hikmah some reprieve and enabled her to pursue the academic excellence she has now achieved.<\/p>\n<p>All her achievements are possible, she believes, because of the support she has received \u2013 from family, friends and the University. She also credits picking the right courses in NUS, that have opened up a whole new world of learning.<\/p>\n<p>Hikmah graduated with a Bachelor of Arts with Honours (Highest Distinction) in Malay Studies on 6 July.<\/p>\n<p>With all that she\u2019s gained at NUS, Hikmah hopes \u201cto address some of the problematic ideas that are rampant in society.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMalay Studies has helped me to understand my own realities better,\u201d she said.
