He believed such plays were closer to what ky\u014dgen must have been like in medieval Japan, prior to its designation as the \u201cceremonial art\u201d (<em>shikigaku<\/em>) of the Tokugawa Shogunate (1603-1868). As a performer, Sennoj\u014d broke many barriers in the ky\u014dgen world, experimenting widely in the post-WWII era. He worked collaboratively with kabuki as well as contemporary actors, commedia del arte performers, opera singers and actors in the tradition. Sennoj\u014d\u2019s son and grandson, Akira and D\u014dji, also continue to expand boundaries, while simultaneously maintaining the traditional core of ky\u014dgen. Akira co-founded NOHO Theatre Company with director Jonah Salz in 1982, fusing noh and ky\u014dgen convention with scripts of Becket, Shakespeare, Yeats and others. D\u014dji produces several productions annually under his own production company, D\u014dji Company, as well as collaborates nationally and internationally with numerous artists, including Singaporean director Ong Keng Sen.<\/p>\n<p>The 2016-2017 academic year at the University of Hawai\u2032i Dept. of Theatre and Dance featured, as the cornerstone of the Asian Theatre Program, intensive ky\u014dgen training under Shigeyama Akira and Shigeyama D\u014dji, culminating in an English language production in April 2017 featuring three plays. The first,\u00a0<em>TWO GREAT LORDS<\/em>\u00a0(<em>Futari Daimy\u014d<\/em>), is a traditional play, honoring the 600-year tradition of ky\u014dgen. The second, a newly written ky\u014dgen by Shigeyama D\u014dji called\u00a0<em>TWO MOUNTAIN PRIESTS<\/em>\u00a0(<em>Futari Yamabushi<\/em>), premiered in Kyoto in 2014 and demonstrates that \u201ctraditional\u201d and \u201ccontemporary\u201d ways of thinking are really two sides of a coin.<\/p>\n<p>The third piece,\u00a0<em>DERAILED,\u00a0<\/em>written by Matthew Kelty and workshopped by the cast, is a contemporary ky\u014dgen play set in Hawai\u02bbi, which fuses ky\u014dgen convention with Hawaiian lore and current politics, honoring both the satirical nature of medieval ky\u014dgen and the experimental spirit of my teacher, Sennoj\u014d, as well as his descendants.\u00a0 This paper explores the process of writing and developing the play, setting it in the context of current political affairs and the Hawaiian renaissance in the state of Hawai\u2032i, as well as the history and expectations of the University of Hawai\u2032i\u2019s Asian Theatre Program.<\/p>\n\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/fass.nus.edu.sg\/performct\/session-three-2\/\" target=\"_self\" role=\"button\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tBack to Session Page\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/a>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Julie Iezzi: Building Bridges and Tearing Down Pylons: Medieval Satire for a 21st Century Hawai\u2032i Julie Iezzi, University of Hawai\u2019i at M\u0101noa Contemporary Tradition \u2013 Japanese Performance Genre Today:\u00a0Session Three Watch the video recording of the performance,\u00a0Derailed\u00a0that was\u00a0discussed in the presentation\u00a0here.
