This is only a suggestion, not a requirement. Courses within each sub-area tend to be interrelated in ways that allow students to both deepen and broaden their interest and learning in more meaningful ways.<\/p>\n<h3>\n\t\t\tAcademic Requirements for Majors\t<\/h3>\n\t<p>The requirements for the Philosophy Major depends on the student&#8217;s cohort.<\/p>\n<p>Note: Beginning from AY2015\/2016, GET1029\/GEX1015 Life, the Universe, and Everything replaces PH1102E Introduction to Philosophy as the Philosophy exposure course. Philosophy major students are not allowed to use either GET1029\/GEX1015 to fulfil GE or Unrestricted Electives outside student&#8217;s major. As per the university&#8217;s guidelines, GE coded courses cannot be used to fulfill major requirements, the exception being GET1029\/GEX1015 and GET1028\/GEX1014.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>GET1025\/GEX1011, GET1026\/GEX1012, GET1027\/GEX1012 and GES1041\/GESS1029 cannot be used to fulfil the PH major requirements.<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>With effect from Semester 1, AY2019-2020, PE2101P is recognised towards fulfilling the single Major [B.A. and B.A. (Hons)] requirements in Philosophy for Cohort 2015 onwards. Students who read this course prior to Semester 1, AY2019-2020 can count the course towards these requirements.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t<a href=\"#\" id=\"fl-accordion--label-0\" aria-controls=\"fl-accordion--panel-0\">Cohort 2021 onwards<\/a>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<a href=\"#\" id=\"fl-accordion--icon-0\"><i title=\"Expand\">Expand<\/i><\/a>\n\t\t\t\t\t<p>The single Major B.A. is not offered for Cohort 2021 onwards.<\/p>\n<h3>\n\t\t\tAcademic Requirements for Major with Honours\t<\/h3>\n\t<p>Undergraduates admitted to the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences may major in philosophy and obtain the B.A. (Honours) degree, the requirements for which depends on which cohort the student is from.<\/p>\n<p>Note: Beginning from AY2015\/2016, GET1029\/GEX1015 Life, the Universe, and Everything replaces PH1102E Introduction to Philosophy as the Philosophy exposure course. Pass at least 60 units of PH courses or <a href=\"https:\/\/fass.nus.edu.sg\/philo\/recognised-courses\/\">PH-recognised courses<\/a> which include the following:<\/p>\n(1) GEX1015 Life, the Universe, and Everything<br \/>\n(2) GEX1014 Logic<br \/>\n(3) a minimum of 28 units at level-3000 or higher, with a minimum of 12 units at level-4000 or higher<br \/>\n(4) a maximum of 2 PH course at level-5000 (subject to department&#8217;s approval)<br \/>\n(5) a maximum of 8 units of <a href=\"https:\/\/fass.nus.edu.sg\/philo\/recognised-courses\/\">PH-recognised courses<\/a>\n<p>Note: Students are allowed to read level-4000 courses subject to departmental approval.<\/p>\n<h3>\n\t\t\tThe Honours Thesis and the Independent Study Course\t<\/h3>\n\t<p>PH4401\/PH4401HM Honours Thesis is an optional course. To qualify to enroll, students from the 2007 Cohort onwards must be on the Honours Track. Students from the 2007 Cohort to the 2014 Cohort must complete at least 110 units including 60 units of PH major requirements and obtain a minimum GPA of 3.50. Students from the 2015 Cohort and onwards must complete at least 110 units including 44 units of PH major requirements and obtain a minimum GPA of 3.50.<\/p>\n<strong>PH4401 Prerequisite<\/strong><br \/>\nCohort 2021 and onwards, must complete at least 110 units including 40 units of PH major requirements and obtain a minimum GAP of 3.50\n<strong>PH4401HM Prerequisite<br \/>\n<\/strong>Cohort 2015 and before, must complete at least 110 units including 44 units of PH major requirements and obtain a minimum GPA of 3.50.\n<p>The Honours thesis is offered as a year-long course but will still only count for a total of 8 units or 15 units (8 units for PH4401, and 15 units for PH4401HM). Detailed information on the Honours Thesis can be found in the linked document <a href=\"https:\/\/fass.nus.edu.sg\/philo\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2024\/10\/HT-Write-Up-Final-1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>PH4660\/PH4660HM Independent Studies course is also optional. To register for PH4660\/PH4660HM, a student must obtain the agreement of a faculty member to supervise an approved topic of study. A written agreement between the student and supervisor must be submitted to the Head of Department for approval. The form of the agreement can be downloaded <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.nus.edu.sg\/philo\/files\/2020\/11\/ISM-CONTRACT-UG-PG-general.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>PH4401\/PH4401HM and PH4660\/PH4660HM preclude each other (i.e. students are not allowed to enroll in both).<\/p>\n<h3>\n\t\t\tInternship\t<\/h3>\n\t<p><strong>Restriction on Concurrent Enrollment:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Students enrolled in <strong>PH4550\/PH4550HM<\/strong> are <strong>NOT permitted<\/strong> to use the same internship for any other <strong>unit-bearing internship course*<\/strong> in the same semester.<\/p>\n<p>If you are currently enrolled in any other <strong>unit-bearing internship course*<\/strong>, you cannot use the same internship for credit towards <strong>PH4550\/PH4550HM<\/strong> during the same semester.<\/p>\n<p>*This restriction includes, but is not limited to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Department-administered internships (compulsory or non-compulsory)<\/li>\n<li>FASS Internship Programme (FASSIP)<\/li>\n<li>CFG2101 NUS Vacation Internship Programme<\/li>\n<li>NOC unit-bearing internships<\/li>\n<li>Any other unit-bearing internship courses<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>\n\t\t\tAcademic Requirements for Second Majors\t<\/h3>\n\t<p>The requirements for the Philosophy Major depends on the student&#8217;s cohort.<\/p>\n<p>Note: Beginning from AY2015\/2016, GET1029\/GEX1015 Life, the Universe, and Everything replaces PH1102E Introduction to Philosophy as the Philosophy exposure course. This will be counted towards Faculty Core or UE requirements.<\/li>\n<li>Pass at least 36 units of PH or <a href=\"https:\/\/fass.nus.edu.sg\/philo\/recognised-courses\/\">PH-recognised courses<\/a> which include the following:<br \/>\n(1) GET1028 Logic<br \/>\n(2) a minimum of 16 units at level-3000 or higher<br \/>\n(3) a maximum of 10 units of <a href=\"https:\/\/fass.nus.edu.sg\/philo\/recognized-modules\/\">PH-recognised courses<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Note: Students are allowed to read level-4000 course subject to departmental approval.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t<a href=\"#\" id=\"fl-accordion--label-1\" aria-controls=\"fl-accordion--panel-1\">Second Major, Cohort 2021 onwards<\/a>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<a href=\"#\" id=\"fl-accordion--icon-1\"><i title=\"Expand\">Expand<\/i><\/a>\n\t\t\t\t\t<p>1. Pass at least 40 units of PH courses or <a href=\"https:\/\/fass.nus.edu.sg\/philo\/recognised-courses\/\">PH-recognised courses<\/a> which include the following:<\/p>\n(1) GEX1015 Life, the Universe, and Everything<br \/>\n(2) GEX1014 Logic<br \/>\n(3) a minimum of 16 units at level-3000 or higher<br \/>\n(4) a maximum of 8 units of <a href=\"https:\/\/fass.nus.edu.sg\/philo\/recognised-courses\/\">PH-recognised courses<\/a>\n<p>Note: Students are allowed to read level-4000 courses subject to departmental approval.<\/p>\n<h3>\n\t\t\tAcademic Requirements for Minors\t<\/h3>\n\t<p>Undergraduate students are always welcome to enroll in philosophy courses even if they do not lead to a major in philosophy. In general, level 1000 to 3000 courses are accessible to non-majors students (note that some courses may have pre-requisites), but level 4000 courses are normally restricted to majors unless permission is sought from the Department.<\/p>\n<p>The requirements for the Philosophy Major depends on the student&#8217;s cohort.<\/p>\n<p>*Note: Courses which are cross-listed with PH courses can be used to satisfy the minor requirement. As per the university&#8217;s guidelines, GE coded courses cannot be used to fulfill minor requirements, the exception being GET1029\/GEX1015.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>GET1025\/GEX1011, GET1026\/GEX1012, GET1027\/GEX1012 and GES1041\/GESS1029 cannot be used to fulfil the PH major requirements.<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>For a small number of GEMs which are specially approved for inclusion in some FASS Major\/Second Major\/Minor requirements, students reading such GEMs can only count them to either the General Education requirements or the Major\/Second Major\/Minor requirements, but not both (i.e., no double counting is allowed).
