{"id":12057,"date":"2024-09-17T10:44:39","date_gmt":"2024-09-17T02:44:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/fass.nus.edu.sg\/sea\/?page_id=12057"},"modified":"2024-09-17T11:09:24","modified_gmt":"2024-09-17T03:09:24","slug":"programme-requirements","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/fass.nus.edu.sg\/sea\/phd\/programme-requirements\/","title":{"rendered":"Programme Requirements"},"content":{"rendered":"\r\n<h2>Programme Requirements<\/h2>\r\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/fass.nus.edu.sg\/sea\/wp-content\/plugins\/bb-plugin\/img\/pixel.png\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\r\n<table width=\"100%\">\r\n<tbody>\r\n<tr>\r\n<td width=\"190\"><strong>Degree<\/strong><\/td>\r\n<td width=\"599\">Doctor of Philosophy<\/td>\r\n<\/tr>\r\n<tr>\r\n<td><strong>Start of Programme<\/strong><\/td>\r\n<td>August<\/td>\r\n<\/tr>\r\n<tr>\r\n<td><strong>Language of Instruction<\/strong><\/td>\r\n<td>English<\/td>\r\n<\/tr>\r\n<tr>\r\n<td><strong>Location<\/strong><\/td>\r\n<td>Singapore<\/td>\r\n<\/tr>\r\n<tr>\r\n<td><strong>Mode of Study<\/strong><\/td>\r\n<td>Full-Time or Part-Time\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>International students on student visa must be enrolled full-time<\/li>\r\n<li>Admission as a part-time student is at the discretion of the Department<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/td>\r\n<\/tr>\r\n<tr>\r\n<td><strong>Duration of Degree<\/strong><\/td>\r\n<td>Maximum candidature for both Full-Time and Part-Time: Five (5) years<\/td>\r\n<\/tr>\r\n<tr>\r\n<td><strong>Residency Requirement<\/strong><\/td>\r\n<td>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>Students must spend at least eighteen (18) months in Singapore during their candidature<\/li>\r\n<li>Students who receive NUS Research Scholarship must reside in Singapore throughout the duration of the scholarship<\/li>\r\n<li>Periods of study leave and overseas fieldwork do not count towards residency requirement<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/td>\r\n<\/tr>\r\n<\/tbody>\r\n<\/table>\r\n<table width=\"100%\">\r\n<tbody>\r\n<tr>\r\n<td width=\"190\"><strong>Coursework Requirements<\/strong><\/td>\r\n<td width=\"599\">Complete and pass at least six (6) courses or 24 units, unless exemption has been granted by the University, which include:\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>One (1) required course: SE6770 Graduate Research Seminar (4 units)<\/li>\r\n<li>Five (5) elective courses, of which:\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>A minimum of three (3) courses (equivalent to 12 units) must be at level 6000<\/li>\r\n<li>A maximum of one (1) course (equivalent to 4 units) may be at level 4000<\/li>\r\n<li>The remaining courses must be at level 5000 or 6000<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p>Optional: Up to two (2) Independent Study courses &#8211; SE5660 and\/or SE6660<\/p>\r\nNote: Students should discuss with their thesis advisors on the relevant courses they need to take.<\/td>\r\n<\/tr>\r\n<tr>\r\n<td><strong>English Language Requirement<\/strong><\/td>\r\n<td>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>Some students may be required to take the Diagnostic English Test (DET) to determine their English proficiency (Selected students will be notified in their offer of admission letter).<\/li>\r\n<li>Depending on their DET results, students may be required to take a Graduate English Course(s) or be exempted from taking the course(s) altogether.<\/li>\r\n<li>Students who are required to take the Graduate English Course(s) must obtain at least grade &#8216;C&#8217; in the course(s) at intermediate level within 2 years of their candidature.<\/li>\r\n<li>Graduate English Course(s) are not counted towards the 24 units required for the PhD degree coursework requirements.<\/li>\r\n<li><strong>ALL<\/strong> students must complete and pass the compulsory course NG5001 Academic Communication for Postgraduate Researchers.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/td>\r\n<\/tr>\r\n<tr>\r\n<td><strong>PhD Qualifying Examination (QE)<\/strong><\/td>\r\n<td>Students must pass a Qualifying Examination (QE) within the first 2 years of the PhD candidature. A second QE may be attempted within this period if the student fail at the first attempt. Students must fulfill the following before being allowed to sit for the QE:\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>Complete and pass at least five (5) courses, including two (2) at level 6000, with a minimum Grade Point Average (GPA) of 3.50;<\/li>\r\n<li>Where applicable, obtain at least grade &#8216;C&#8217; in the Graduate English Course(s) at the intermediate level; and<\/li>\r\n<li>Other departmental requirements, if any.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p>The QE comprises:<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>Comprehensive examinations as determined by the Department to test the general competence of the student in his\/her discipline(s) or field(s);<\/li>\r\n<li>Submission of a 30- to 50-page thesis proposal; and<\/li>\r\n<li>An oral defence of the thesis proposal held before a 3-member panel of the Thesis Committee<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/td>\r\n<\/tr>\r\n<tr>\r\n<td><strong>Thesis<\/strong><\/td>\r\n<td>Students must complete and submit a thesis within the maximum period of candidature.A PhD thesis should not exceed 80, 000 words (including footnotes but excluding appendices, bibliography, maps, charts, statistical tables, graphs, illustrations, etc.).<\/td>\r\n<\/tr>\r\n<tr>\r\n<td><strong>PhD Oral Examination<\/strong><\/td>\r\n<td>Students must present himself\/herself for an oral examination on the subject matter of the thesis and related subjects after submitting his\/her thesis.The oral examination comprises an oral presentation followed by an oral defence\/open discussion.<\/td>\r\n<\/tr>\r\n<tr>\r\n<td><strong>Minimum Grade Requirements<\/strong><\/td>\r\n<td>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>Students whose Grade Point Average (GPA) falls below 3.50 (but \u2265 3.00) in any semester will be issued an academic warning.<\/li>\r\n<li>Students whose Grade Point Average (GPA) falls below 3.50 for 2 consecutive semesters will be placed on probation.<\/li>\r\n<li>Students whose Grade Point Average (GPA) falls below 3.50 for the third consecutive semester will be issued a letter of dismissal and denied re-admission.<\/li>\r\n<li>Students whose Grade Point Average (GPA) falls below 3.00 in any semester will be placed on probation.<\/li>\r\n<li>\u00a0Students whose Grade Point Average (GPA) falls below 3.00 for 2 consecutive semesters will be issued a letter of dismissal.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\nNote: Students may be issued an academic warning or placed on probation or issued letter of dismissal for poor performance in the PhD QE, research thesis or other programme requirements.<\/td>\r\n<\/tr>\r\n<tr>\r\n<td><strong>Award of Degree<\/strong><\/td>\r\n<td>A student will be recommended for award of degree if he\/she has met the following requirements:\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>Completed and passed six (6) courses (refer to coursework requirements above);<\/li>\r\n<li>Obtained a minimum Grade Point Average (GPA) of 3.50;<\/li>\r\n<li>Passed the PhD Qualifying Examination (QE);<\/li>\r\n<li>Passed the PhD thesis;<\/li>\r\n<li>Passed the PhD Oral Examination;<\/li>\r\n<li>Completed and passed NG5001 Academic Communication for Postgraduate Researchers;<\/li>\r\n<li>Where applicable, obtained at least grade &#8216;C&#8217;
