The Department does not run aptitude or qualifying tests.<\/p>\n<p>Undergraduate students may choose to single major in Southeast Asian Studies and graduate with a B.A. (Hons). Alternatively, students may read Southeast Asian Studies as a second major alongside their primary major under the double major degree structure.<\/p>\n\t<h5>Students who would like to major in Southeast Asian Studies should read the advisory for SE majors and the policy on reading SE language courses available in the <a href=\"https:\/\/myportal.nus.edu.sg\/studentportal\/fas\/sea\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Student Portal<\/a>.<\/h5>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<a href=\"#\" id=\"fl-tabs--label-0\" data-index=\"0\" aria-controls=\"fl-tabs--panel-0\" aria-expanded=\"true\" role=\"tab\">\t\t\t\tCohort 2023 onwards\t\t\t\t<\/a>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<a href=\"#\" id=\"fl-tabs--label-1\" data-index=\"1\" aria-controls=\"fl-tabs--panel-1\" aria-expanded=\"false\" role=\"tab\">\t\t\t\tCohort 2021 to 2022\t\t\t\t<\/a>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<a href=\"#\" id=\"fl-tabs--label-2\" data-index=\"2\" aria-controls=\"fl-tabs--panel-2\" aria-expanded=\"false\" role=\"tab\">\t\t\t\tCohort 2016 to 2020\t\t\t\t<\/a>\n\t\t\t\t\t\tCohort 2023 onwards\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><strong>Single Major [B.A. (Hons)]<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Pass at least 60 Units of SE and SE-recognised courses, which include:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>SE1101E The Lands Below the Winds: Southeast Asia in the World<\/li>\n<li>SE4101 Southeast Asia Studies: Theory and Practice (4 Units)<\/li>\n<li>a <u>minimum<\/u> of 12 Units of Southeast Asian language courses (i.e. Bahasa Indonesia, Malay, Thai or Vietnamese)<\/li>\n<li>a <u>minimum<\/u> of 28 Units at level-3000 or higher (excluding language courses (See Note 1)) with,\n<ol>\n<li>a minimum of 12 Units at level-4000 or higher (including SE4101)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li>a maximum of 2 level-5000 SE courses<\/li>\n<li>a maximum of 8 Units SE-recognised courses, of which 4 Units may be at level-4000 (excluding language courses)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Note 1: A maximum of one more level-3000 or level-4000 language course that has not been included in the 12 Units of the language courses in point (4) above may be read subject to departmental approval.<\/p>\n<p>Note 2: All the language requirements will normally be in only\u00a0<strong>ONE<\/strong> language track, i.e., Bahasa Indonesia or Malay or Thai or Vietnamese. The language courses will be offered by the Centre for Language Studies. Under certain circumstances, students may be allowed to transfer to another SE language track. This will be counted towards the Faculty Core or UE requirements.<\/li>\n<li>Pass at least 84 Units of SE and SE-recognised courses, which include:\n<ul>\n<li>SE4101 (4 Units) or SE4101HM (5 Units)<\/li>\n<li>a\u00a0<u>minimum<\/u> of 16 Units of Southeast Asian language courses (i.e. Bahasa Indonesia, Malay, Thai or Vietnamese)<\/li>\n<li>a\u00a0<u>minimum<\/u> of 60 Units at level-3000 or higher (excluding language courses (See Note 1) ) with,\n<ul>\n<li>a\u00a0<u>minimum<\/u> of 40 Units at level-4000 or higher (including SE4101 or SE4101HM)<\/li>\n<li>a\u00a0<u>minimum<\/u> of 25 Units of level-4000 SE courses<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>a maximum of 2 level-5000 SE courses<\/li>\n<li>a maximum of 23 Units SE-recognised courses (excluding language courses)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<table width=\"100%\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"100%\">Note 1:\u00a0 A maximum of one more level-4000 SE language course that has not been included in the 16 Units of the language courses in point (3) above may be read subject to departmental approval.\n<p>Note 2: All the language requirements will normally be in only\u00a0<strong>ONE<\/strong> language track, i.e., Bahasa Indonesia or Malay or Thai or Vietnamese. To qualify for the Honours Thesis, students must complete 110 Units including 44 Units of SE Major requirements with a minimum GPA of 3.50.<\/p>\n<p>Note 5: Students who do not attempt the Honours Thesis will read level-4000 courses to fulfill the Honours Requirements.<\/p>\n<p>Note 6: Students may also read a level-4000 Independent Studies Course (5 Units). The level-4000 ISM carries a prerequisite of 110 Units completed, including 44 Units in the Major, with a minimum GPA of 3.20. It precludes the Honours Thesis.<\/p>\n<p>Note 7: All level-4000 courses carry a general prerequisite of having completed 80 Units, including 28 Units in the Major, with a minimum GPA of 3.20 OR being on the Honours track. Students will move on to the Honours track directly upon fulfilling\u00a0<strong><u>ALL<\/u><\/strong>\u00a0of the following criteria:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Completed at least 110 Units, including 44 Units of SE major requirements; and<\/li>\n<li>Obtained a minimum GPA of 3.20<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Students who have met the honours track criteria but\u00a0<u>do not<\/u>\u00a0wish to pursue the honours programme should file for graduation for the B.A degree.\u00a0<\/strong>Students who have started on their Honours programme, but their GPA subsequently fall to below 3.20, are still allowed to complete their Honours requirements. This is because we do not remove the Honours track status from students even if they subsequently fail to sustain the minimum GPA.<\/p>\n<h3>\n\t\t\tHonours Thesis\t<\/h3>\n\t<p><strong>The Honours Thesis (HT) is not a compulsory requirement to be awarded an honours degree.\u00a0<\/strong>Writing an HT allows students to explore a topic of personal interest in depth, under the guidance of a faculty supervisor. Students who prefer not to write an HT may still take part in independent critical reading or research through the Independent Study Module (ISM).<\/p>\n<p>Many SE Honours students choose to conduct part of their research in a Southeast Asian country. To support this, a <strong data-start=\"775\" data-end=\"799\">Student Project Fund<\/strong> is available to help cover research expenses.<\/p>\n<h5><strong><br \/>\nRegistration<\/strong><\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li data-start=\"191\" data-end=\"298\">\nStudents are strongly encouraged to complete <strong data-start=\"238\" data-end=\"248\">SE4101<\/strong> before undertaking the <strong data-start=\"272\" data-end=\"295\">Honours Thesis (HT)<\/strong>.\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"299\" data-end=\"415\">\nThe HT is open <strong data-start=\"316\" data-end=\"365\">only to students in their graduating semester<\/strong>, and it must be completed within that semester.\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"416\" data-end=\"526\">\nAn email invitation will be sent to all <strong data-start=\"458\" data-end=\"483\">ARS4 Honours students<\/strong> with details on how to apply for the HT\/ISM.\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>\n\t\t\tIndependent Study (ISM)\t<\/h3>\n\t<p>Students who would like to read the ISM must meet the following requirements:<\/p>\n<h5><strong>Cohort 2021 onwards<\/strong><\/h5>\nPre-requisites: Completed 100 Units, including 40 Units in SE, with a minimum GPA of 3.20.<br \/>\nPreclusions: SE4401, SE4660HM\n\tFor students applying to <strong data-start=\"553\" data-end=\"573\">SE4660 (4 Units)<\/strong> or <strong data-start=\"577\" data-end=\"597\">SE4401 (8 Units)<\/strong>:\n<ul data-start=\"601\" data-end=\"957\">\n<li data-start=\"601\" data-end=\"689\">\nPlease submit your application and research proposal within the stipulated deadline.\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"690\" data-end=\"819\">\nOnce your research proposal is approved, the course will be pre-allocated to you via <strong data-start=\"796\" data-end=\"816\">CourseReg@EduRec<\/strong>.\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"820\" data-end=\"957\">\nStudents should ensure that <strong data-start=\"845\" data-end=\"869\">4 Units (for SE4660)<\/strong> or <strong data-start=\"873\" data-end=\"897\">8 Units (for SE4401)<\/strong> are available in your workload to accommodate the course.\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Single Major The Department of Southeast Asian Studies welcomes students with good results in GCE &#8216;A&#8217; Levels and a keen interest in Southeast Asia.
