Capistrano- Baker and John Guy (eds.),<strong><em> Philippine Ancestral Gold<\/em><\/strong>, Singapore: NUS Press, 2012<\/p>\n<p><em>Philippine Ancestral Gold<\/em> is a spectacular publication\u00a0\u00a0 in full-color that features more than 1,000 gold objects that were recovered in\u00a0\u00a0 the Philippines from the 1960s to 1981 and now form part of the collection of\u00a0\u00a0 the Ayala Museum in Manila. Many of these treasures were found in association\u00a0\u00a0 with tenth-to-twelfth century Chinese export ceramics, and formal similarities\u00a0\u00a0 with objects from other Southeast Asian cultures affirm regional affinities and\u00a0\u00a0 inter-island trade networks that flourished in the region before there was\u00a0\u00a0 regular contact with the Western world. Adornments of elite individuals and the\u00a0\u00a0 deities they adored include a spectacular array of golden sashes, necklaces,\u00a0\u00a0 pectorals, diadems, earrings, finger rings, and arm and leg ornaments.<\/p>\n<p>The book situates these objects within the context of early\u00a0\u00a0 Southeast Asian history. In the first chapter, Floriana H. Capistrano-Baker\u00a0\u00a0 outlines the history of the collection and presents an overview of the objects\u00a0\u00a0 according to over-lapping categories of form, function, technology, and\u00a0\u00a0 geographic provenance. In the second chapter, John Miksic explains how the\u00a0\u00a0 collection contributes to a reassessment of the prehistory of Southeast Asia.\u00a0\u00a0 Miksic notes the persistence of indigenous forms and the localization of\u00a0\u00a0 imported traditions, and discusses the correlation between burial practices and\u00a0\u00a0 social organization and suggests that the removal of gold objects from\u00a0\u00a0 circulation through ritual burial is an indicator of non-hereditary leadership.\u00a0\u00a0 Chapter 3, John Guy examines the meaning and metamorphosis of forms in\u00a0\u00a0 comparison with related material recovered in the region. Guy highlights\u00a0\u00a0 stylistic similarities and differences between the Philippine objects and those\u00a0\u00a0 from such cultures as Java, Champa, and Borneo. He discusses as well the\u00a0\u00a0 important role of export ceramics in dating associated gold finds.
