{"id":711,"date":"2007-04-27T02:02:38","date_gmt":"2007-04-27T02:02:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/fass.nus.edu.sg\/sea\/?p=711"},"modified":"2020-10-20T02:03:13","modified_gmt":"2020-10-20T02:03:13","slug":"thai-princess-performed-with-the-nus-thai-music-ensemble","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fass.nus.edu.sg\/sea\/2007\/04\/27\/thai-princess-performed-with-the-nus-thai-music-ensemble\/","title":{"rendered":"Thai Princess performed with the NUS Thai Music Ensemble"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Thai princess ends fruitful visit to S&#8217;pore<\/strong>, <em>The Straits Times, Thursday 26 April 2007.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>PRINCESS Maha Chakri Sirindhom\u00a0of Thailand wrapped up a\u00a0three-day visit to Singapore\u00a0yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>She made four stops on her\u00a0last day here, which started at\u00a09.30am and included a visit to\u00a0the Genome Institute of Singapore\u00a0(GIS) in Buona Vista.<\/p>\n<p>Touring the institute&#8217;s\u00a0research facilities, the princess\u00a0showed&#8221;, &#8220;good grasp and\u00a0great interest&#8221; in genetic sciences,\u00a0said GIS&#8217; deputy director,\u00a0Associate Professor Lawrence\u00a0Stanton.<\/p>\n<p>Her three-day visit began, with the launch of the International\u00a0Convention for Rehabilitation\u00a0Engineering and Assistive\u00a0Technology.<\/p>\n<p>The inaugural conference\u00a0and exhibition, which ends today,\u00a0showcases devices and\u00a0technology designed to rehabilitate\u00a0people with disabilities:<\/p>\n<p>Known for her involvement\u00a0in community and social development projects, the princess&#8217;<br \/>\ninterest in health care stems\u00a0from the influence of her grandparents,\u00a0who were trained medical\u00a0personnel.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to her visits, she\u00a0also made personal donations\u00a0of $5,000 each to three centres for the disabled &#8211; the Rainbow Centre and Margaret Drive Special School, SIA-Minds Employment Development Centre, and the Tan Tock Seng Hospital Rehabilitation Centre.<\/p>\n<p>On the diplomatic front&#8221; she\u00a0met Singapore&#8217;s leaders,\u00a0including Prime Minister Lee\u00a0Hsien Loong who hosted a\u00a0lunch for her at the Istana.<\/p>\n<p>The warm hospitality shown\u00a0her left the princess &#8220;extremely\u00a0pleased&#8221; with her visit, said\u00a0the Thai Ambassador to\u00a0Singapore, Mr Chalermpol\u00a0Thanchitt.<\/p>\n<p>It was not all work, though.\u00a0She found time to attend a concert at the University Cultural Centre in Kent Ridge on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>The Singapore Chinese\u00a0Orchestra (SCO) performed\u00a0two songs composed, by the\u00a0princess.<\/p>\n<p>She gamely agreed to join\u00a0the orchestra on stage, playing\u00a0a tune on the <em>sor duang<\/em> (a<br \/>\ntwo-string violin-like Thai instrument)\u00a0with the National\u00a0University of Singapore Thai\u00a0Music Ensemble and SCO.<\/p>\n<p>The rare royal performance received a standing ovation.<\/p>\n<p>Said Mr Chalermpol: &#8220;It\u00a0was a great show of friendship\u00a0and unity.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>View the <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.nus.edu.sg\/seanews\/files\/2007\/04\/ST26Apr_ThaiPrincess-25dsj9f.pdf\">original article<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Thai princess ends fruitful visit to S&#8217;pore, The Straits Times, Thursday 26 April 2007.
