Thai princess ends fruitful visit to S’pore<\/strong>, The Straits Times, Thursday 26 April 2007.<\/em><\/p>\n

PRINCESS Maha Chakri Sirindhom\u00a0of Thailand wrapped up a\u00a0three-day visit to Singapore\u00a0yesterday.<\/p>\n

She made four stops on her\u00a0last day here, which started at\u00a09.30am and included a visit to\u00a0the Genome Institute of Singapore\u00a0(GIS) in Buona Vista.<\/p>\n

Touring the institute’s\u00a0research facilities, the princess\u00a0showed”, “good grasp and\u00a0great interest” in genetic sciences,\u00a0said GIS’ deputy director,\u00a0Associate Professor Lawrence\u00a0Stanton.<\/p>\n

Her three-day visit began, with the launch of the International\u00a0Convention for Rehabilitation\u00a0Engineering and Assistive\u00a0Technology.<\/p>\n

The inaugural conference\u00a0and exhibition, which ends today,\u00a0showcases devices and\u00a0technology designed to rehabilitate\u00a0people with disabilities:<\/p>\n

Known for her involvement\u00a0in community and social development projects, the princess’
\ninterest in health care stems\u00a0from the influence of her grandparents,\u00a0who were trained medical\u00a0personnel.<\/p>\n

In addition to her visits, she\u00a0also made personal donations\u00a0of $5,000 each to three centres for the disabled – the Rainbow Centre and Margaret Drive Special School, SIA-Minds Employment Development Centre, and the Tan Tock Seng Hospital Rehabilitation Centre.<\/p>\n

On the diplomatic front” she\u00a0met Singapore’s leaders,\u00a0including Prime Minister Lee\u00a0Hsien Loong who hosted a\u00a0lunch for her at the Istana.<\/p>\n

The warm hospitality shown\u00a0her left the princess “extremely\u00a0pleased” with her visit, said\u00a0the Thai Ambassador to\u00a0Singapore, Mr Chalermpol\u00a0Thanchitt.<\/p>\n

It was not all work, though.\u00a0She found time to attend a concert at the University Cultural Centre in Kent Ridge on Monday.<\/p>\n

The Singapore Chinese\u00a0Orchestra (SCO) performed\u00a0two songs composed, by the\u00a0princess.<\/p>\n

She gamely agreed to join\u00a0the orchestra on stage, playing\u00a0a tune on the sor duang<\/em> (a
\ntwo-string violin-like Thai instrument)\u00a0with the National\u00a0University of Singapore Thai\u00a0Music Ensemble and SCO.<\/p>\n

The rare royal performance received a standing ovation.<\/p>\n

Said Mr Chalermpol: “It\u00a0was a great show of friendship\u00a0and unity.”<\/p>\n
