{"id":713,"date":"2007-08-30T02:03:31","date_gmt":"2007-08-30T02:03:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/fass.nus.edu.sg\/sea\/?p=713"},"modified":"2020-10-20T02:04:09","modified_gmt":"2020-10-20T02:04:09","slug":"seas-alumnus-wang-zineng-featured-in-nus-centre-for-the-arts-cfa-artzone-magazine-issue-2-aug-oct-2007","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fass.nus.edu.sg\/sea\/2007\/08\/30\/seas-alumnus-wang-zineng-featured-in-nus-centre-for-the-arts-cfa-artzone-magazine-issue-2-aug-oct-2007\/","title":{"rendered":"SEAS Alumnus Wang Zineng featured in NUS Centre for the Arts (CFA) Artzone Magazine Issue 2, Aug &#8211; Oct 2007"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>One Cool Guy &#8211; Wang Zineng has chosen a route less followed by his peers in opting for a life dedicated to the arts<\/strong>, <em>Artzone Issue 2, August &#8211; October 2007.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>While others are busy climbing their way up the career\u00a0ladder in the private or public sector, Zineng chose a\u00a0subtler route.<\/p>\n<p>What differentiates him from the rest of the recent\u00a0crop of graduants is his eye for detail and an infinite\u00a0appreciation of the arts, especially visual arts.<\/p>\n<p>For Zineng, the arts scene is not about the glitz and\u00a0the glam. The passion for art in him overpowers the\u00a0conventional path material success.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Zineng has recently completed his honours thesis on\u00a0Malayan batik painting in the Southeast Asian Studies\u00a0Programme, NUS.<\/strong> Presently an adjunct assistant curator\u00a0at NUS Museum, he is in charge of four projects: one\u00a0involves setting up the second installation of NUS\u00a0Museum&#8217;s exhibition on their permanent collection\u00a0known as <em>Highlights: Modern Southeast Asian Art\u00a0Collection<\/em>, which will run until 2008. In this project,\u00a0Zineng helped to finalise the selection of artworks,\u00a0identify the overarching themes of these works, and\u00a0decide where within the NUS Museum to place these\u00a0artworks. He also contributed to the exhibition brochure.<\/p>\n<p>Unlike the movie Night at the Museum where dinosaurs\u00a0were seen chasing humans and working at the museum\u00a0seems like an exciting adventure, Zineng&#8217;s job requires\u00a0more than just surface action. Besides having to do thorough research in preparation for exhibitions, he\u00a0constantly needs to preserve a healthy rapport with the \u00a0staff, artists and other professionals.<\/p>\n<p>When asked about his future plans, he spoke of studying\u00a0textilemaking in Indonesia in August and will continue\u00a0to develop theoretical and context-based bodies of\u00a0knowiedge in Southeast Asian art and culture.<\/p>\n<p>His interests are not confined to modern art. Instead\u00a0he gets pleasure from firsthand research and keeping\u00a0abreast with developments in the study of the\u00a0ethnographic arts.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;My plans are simple; they revolve around only one\u00a0requisite &#8211; that I believe what I do bears relevance and\u00a0interest to people around me. If I ever stop believing, that\u00a0is the day I discontinue making plans.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Zineng shared his heartwarming memories of an\u00a0encounter which took place at the end of an afternoon\u00a0touring <em>Bodies and Relationships: Selected Works of Lee\u00a0Sik Khoon<\/em> before it opened.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Lee Sik Khoon&#8217;s wife came up to me and thanked me\u00a0for putting into words what she has always lett about her\u00a0husband&#8217;s art but could never express.
