Amiel Jansen Demetrial
Ph.D. (Anthropology)
Research Interest: Death, Linguistic Anthropology, Visual Ethnography
Research:
I am currently a PhD student at the Department of Sociology and Anthropology, National University of Singapore. I hold a bachelor’s degree in Communication and a master’s degree in Applied Linguistics from Southern Luzon State University in the Philippines, where I am currently also a lecturer on study leave.
Tentatively, my dissertation topic investigates the intersections between modernity, death and the state. I am specifically interested in the changing ritual practices of the Singaporean Chinese surrounding death. I also have a specific interest in language as a social action and how this could be deployed to language death and culture.
