Thesis / research topic: Gender, work and family; social inequalities; governance and citizenship

A sociologist by training, Ethel is passionate about addressing societal issues and contributing to social change. Her research interests adopt an intersectional lens to examine gender, work and family; social inequalities and precarity; and governance and citizenship. 

Her master’s thesis explored the gender pay gap through the lens of gendered citizenship in Singapore, highlighting the intersections of the military, workplace and home as gendered spaces that not only reproduce and reinforce the gender pay gap, but also produce unequal forms of gendered citizenship. 

Prior to entering NUS, Ethel worked as a Senior Research Assistant at the Lee Kuan Yew Centre for Innovative Cities at the Singapore University of Technology and Design, where her research focused on interdisciplinary studies of work, labour and the economy, as well as cities and communities.
