Research Interest:   Youth Aspiration, Student Mobilities, Transformative University, Marginalised Women, Asia

Lim Chern Yin is a PhD student in Sociology. Her current research interests include youth studies, education, migration (student mobilities), gender, development and social change. She is particularly interested in examining how structure and agency interact to shape the lives of disadvantaged individuals, especially in relation to the education of marginalised young women in Asia, including circumstances surrounding their disempowerment and dynamics contributing to individual transformation and social change. For her doctoral thesis, she is investigating how participation in a ‘transformative university’ influences marginalised young women’s capacity to aspire and shapes their aspiration, identity and agency. Prior to her doctoral studies, she worked in different capacity in the education and the development sectors in Asia since the 1990s. She holds a B.A. (Honours) in Geography (National University of Singapore), a Postgraduate Diploma in Education (NIE, Nanyang Technological University) and an M.A. in Comparative, International and Development Education (University of Toronto).

Dissertation:

Chern Yin’s doctoral research lies in the intersection of the three under-explored themes: 'capacity to aspire', 'discrepant knowledge mobilities', and 'universities as the public good'. Her research investigates how participation in a 'transformative university' influences marginalised young women’s capacity to aspire and shapes their aspiration, identity and agency in an unlikely case of South-South student mobility in Asia. She adopts a case study approach, focusing on an in-depth study of marginalised women migrants pursuing higher education at a university with an alternative social mission in Bangladesh.
