TINNAPHOP SINSOMBOONTHONG
Ph.D. (Sociology)
Research Interest: Queer Theory, Sociology of Human Rights, Sociology of Humor, Postcolonial/Decolonial Theory, and Internet Culture
Tinnaphop Sinsomboonthong (Tintin) (they/them) is a sociologist, online ethnographer, discourse analyst, amateur comedian, and currently a Ph.D. student in sociology at NUS and is also a recipient of the Harvard-Yenching Institute (HYI) – NUS Joint Doctoral Scholarship Programme. Tintin holds a bachelor’s degree in political science from Chulalongkorn University and a master’s degree in development studies from the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE). They are currently on study leave and will return to the Assistant Professor in Sociology position at the Faculty of Sociology and Anthropology, Thammasat University, Thailand, in 2028.
Research:
Currently, Tintin’s doctoral thesis focuses on understanding the cultural making of “queer humor” through jokes, parodies, and memes in “Nongng,” a queer online community in Thailand, and how these humorous practices that were used as “weapons of the weak” against the military junta in recent years are now used to challenge the existing universal notion of “rights” and the culture of “woke” on internet.
