Donated in 1977 by Mr Chng Kiat Leng in memory of his brother, the Chng Heng Lay Memorial Prize is awarded from the proceeds of a capital sum of S$5,000. The prize of S$100 was previously awarded to an Honours student in the Department of Sociology who, in the year of award, had submitted the best academic exercise. From 2020, the prize will be governed by the following conditions: 

1. The prize is awarded to the best group presentation in SC4101 Practising Anthropology and Sociology. 
2. The cash prize is valued at S$500. It will be distributed amongst the group members in the most equitable manner. 
3. Subject to rule 4 below, the award will be made by the relevant Board of Examiners which shall consider the views of the Head of Department of Sociology. The Head, before submitting his/her recommendation to the Board, shall consult the Honours Committee for that year. 
4. No award will be made unless there is a group of sufficient merit.
