\n\t\t\tAbout Sociology and Anthropology DERC\t<\/h2>\n\t

The DERC was set up in 2007, and held its first meeting on 23 July in that year. It comprises of five members (three domain-specific members and two non-domain-specific members). All research activities after July 2007 require approval by the DERC following the requirements set up by the\u00a0NUS Institutional Review Board (IRB)\u00a0and the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASS). Following the NUS IRB’s directives and the FASS Ethics Guidelines for Research with Human Subjects (2006), the DERC has two primary objectives:<\/p>\n

1. To assess the level of risk to human subjects in research projects of the Department’s academic staff members and students; and<\/p>\n

2. To make recommendations on the appropriate type of ethics review for each research project.<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tTypes of Ethics Review and Key Requirements\t<\/h3>\n\t

IRB’s regulations indicate three types of review depending on the level of risk to human subjects<\/p>\n1. Full Review
\n2. Expedited Review
\n3. Exemption\n
