Honours Thesis \/ ISC<\/h2>\r\n

Honours Thesis \/ Independent Study Course<\/h1>\r\n

Students can be allowed to read both HT and ISC but should bear in mind that the HT and ISC topics are to be different and supervised by two different faculty members of the department.<\/p>\r\n

Please read the information below to familiarize yourself with the thesis requirements and submission deadlines.<\/p>\r\n

Criteria<\/h2>\r\n

The HT can be undertaken by Year 4 students. HT is done over two regular semesters without taking a Leave of Absence (LOA) in between.<\/p>\r\n

For cohort 2020 and before: SC4401HM Honours Thesis is worth 15 units in total.<\/p>\r\n

For cohort 2021 onwards: SC4401 \/ AN4401 Honours Thesis is worth 8 units in total.<\/p>\r\n

Supervisor<\/h3>\r\n

We strongly encourage students to choose a topic and find an academic staff member who agrees to supervise your work before applying for the Honours Thesis. The department will not help students to look for a supervisor.<\/p>\r\n

Honours Year Colloquium<\/h3>\r\n

Students embarking on their Honours Thesis are required to attend a compulsory Honours Year colloquium\/briefing conducted by the department’s HT\/ISC coordinator before registering for the Honour Thesis. The department will be sending out an email in January for students who intend to take their HT in Semester 1 of the academic year. Another email will be sent out in October for students intending to take their HT in Semester 2 of the academic year.<\/p>\r\n

Independent Study Course (ISC)<\/h2>\r\n

The Independent Study Course is designed to enable the student to explore an approved topic within the discipline in depth. Students should identify a research topic and approach a supervisor to work on the agreed topic.\u2028\u2028The nature of the work for the ISC is to be determined through discussion and agreement between the supervisor and the student.\u2028\u2028Once the supervisor approves the topic, students are required to fill out the ISC form and sent it to the department administrator at socbox3@nus.edu.sg.<\/p>\r\n

For cohort 2021 onwards: SC4660 \/ AN4660 Independent Study is worth 4 units.<\/p>\r\n

Important Note<\/h3>\r\n

Students are not permitted to take multiple Independent Study Courses with the same title across different departments or faculties.<\/p>\r\n

\u00a0Students may only registered\/enrolled in SC4401\/AN4401 Honours Thesis (HT) if they have:<\/p>\r\n

  • \u00a0Pass at least 40 units of SC\/AN or SC\/AN recognized courses (including Level 1000 to Level 4000 courses)<\/strong><\/em><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n
      \r\n
    • Attended the Honours Year Colloquium\/Briefing conducted by the Department’s HT\/ISC coordinator<\/em>\u00a0<\/strong>to gain more perspective of the course<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/td>\r\n<\/tr>\r\n
Step 2:\u00a0<\/strong>Inform the Department<\/strong><\/td>\r\n\r\n

\u00a0Students to email socbox3@nus.edu.sg with the following information by Instructional Week 2<\/strong><\/em> of the 1st semester:<\/p>\r\n

Step 3: Allocation of SC4401\/AN4401<\/strong><\/td>\r\n\u00a0The Department will allocate eligible students in SC4401\/AN4401 by Instructional Week 3<\/strong><\/em> of the 1st semester.<\/td>\r\n<\/tr>\r\n
Step 4: Final Title Submission<\/strong><\/td>\r\n\u00a0Students to submit final HT Title<\/strong><\/em> via CANVAS<\/strong><\/em> by Instructional Week 7<\/strong><\/em> of the 1st semester. \u00a0please refer to the “Submission Deadline” section above for more information<\/em><\/td>\r\n<\/tr>\r\n<\/tbody>\r\n<\/table>\r\n

Students are required to attend the Honours Year briefing conducted by the department’s HT\/ISC coordinator to gain more perspective of the course.<\/strong><\/p>\r\n

Department Ethics Review Committee (DERC)<\/h2>\r\n

With effect from November 2009, Honours students are not required to apply for DERC review if their research is low-risk, involves non-vulnerable populations, and they is no intention to publish. If there is any risk to subjects, or vulnerable populations are involved, or the student wants to publish, DERC approval is required.<\/p>\r\n
