More than 60 years after anthropology was first taught at NUS and four years after the launch of its standalone undergraduate major, the pioneer cohort leaves behind not only a new academic programme, but also a vibrant student community and a legacy of curiosity, empathy and critical inquiry. Equipped to “make the familiar strange and the strange familiar”, these graduates enter an increasingly AI-driven world with the skills to better understand people, cultures and the complexities of human experience. This well-deserved honour recognises his decades of service and contributions to the Department and the University. Congratulations and best wishes to Prof Farid!<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t \ud83d\udce2 We are pleased to announce the launch of the\u00a0Minor in Criminal Justice<\/a>, from AY26\/27 Semester 2.<\/p>\n The Minor in Criminal Justice offers students a rigorous, multidisciplinary foundation in the study of crime, criminality, justice, and social control, with a central focus on how criminal justice systems define, govern, and respond to crime.<\/p>\n Also featured on The Straits Times “NUS introduces minor in criminal justice after strong uptake of related courses”\u00a0online\u00a0<\/a>and on\u00a0print<\/a>.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t \ud83d\udc4f \u00a0Congratulations to Dr Lau Ting Hui on receiving the Virchow Prize (2024) for her paper,\u00a0“The afterlife of ‘doing medicine’: Birth planning, chronic illness, and regeneration among the Lisu on the China-Myanmar border,<\/a>“<\/em>\u00a0published in\u00a0Medical Anthropology Quarterly<\/em>. Based on long-term ethnographic research with Indigenous Lisu communities in the Nu River Valley, Dr Lau’s work examines the enduring impacts of China’s Birth Planning Policy and how experiences of chronic illness and care continue to shape memories of loss, survival, and regeneration. This award recognition highlights the power of ethnography to illuminate the long-term consequences of health policies and state interventions.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t \ud83d\udc4f The ATEA recognises achievements in teaching, including instruction, educational design, assessment and feedback, as well as wider adoption of good practices in these areas through leadership and support of other colleagues. ATEA also recognises achievements in developing innovative technology-enhanced learning through thoughtful integration of appropriate technology with teaching. Dr Jennifer Estes is also placed on Honour Roll.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t With a keen interest to experience politics and international relations from within the heart of Southeast Asia, Ziyan Tejani from Macquarie University of Australia, embarked on a study-abroad semester with NUS under the NUS Non-Graduating programme.<\/p>\n Read his interview\u00a0<\/a>on his exchange experience in Singapore and a\u00a0quote\u00a0<\/a>about the course SC3205\u00a0Sociology of Power: Who Gets To Rule?<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t \ud83d\udc4f Congratulations to Su Yaxuan, a PhD candidate in Anthropology, on being awarded the highly competitive and prestigious international Wenner-Gren Dissertation Grant. This outstanding achievement reflects the significance and excellence of her research.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t The National University of Singapore (NUS) has achieved its strongest performance in the Quacquarelli Symonds World University Rankings (QS WUR) by Subject since the subject rankings were introduced in 2011.<\/p>\n In the 2026 edition released on 25 March 2026, NUS holds a subject ranking of\u00a0#10<\/a> in Sociology, and its Anthropology programme is ranked #14<\/a>\u00a0worldwide.<\/p>\n Click\u00a0here<\/a>\u00a0to read more.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t Our department mourns the passing of Professor Eddie Kuo, a respected scholar, mentor, and former Head of Sociology (1986-1990).<\/p>\n Professor Kuo’s leadership and vision helped shape the direction of the department during a formative period, leaving a lasting impact on both colleagues and generations of students. He is remembered not only for his intellectual contributions, but also for his generosity, wisdom, and dedication to teaching.<\/p>\n Our deepest condolences to his family and loved ones.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t \ud83d\udc4f Congratulations to Dr Mu Zheng on her well-deserved promotion to Associate Professorship!<\/p>\n Dr. Ali Kassem\u2028 featured by flagship journal International Sociology (International Sociological Association) for his paper on urban modernity and ‘village people’ in Lebanon.<\/a><\/p>\n\t\t\t\t Congratulations to Dr Sahana Ghosh for receiving the Michelle Rosaldo Book Prize from the Association for Feminist Anthropology for \u2028A Thousand Tiny Cuts at the AAA meeting this month<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t On Friday, 21 November 2025, our Department marked a meaningful milestone as students, alumni, faculty members, and staff came together to celebrate its 60th Anniversary.
