Creating ourselves online
October 19, 2012
A/P LIM, deputy head at the Department of Communications and New Media, FASS, attempted to explore the relationship between online spaces and social fabric. To be more specific, using social media, we strategically present a persona to our digital audience. Here, we discover the link between self-curation and self-consciousness. To see how this link works, we are presented with the example of Ms. Amy Cheong. As we engage in self-curation online, we forget to consider the social contexts we are in. We have to be conscious of the diversity of our online audience and recognise that social networks are mapped onto interactions between public and private online domains. In conclusion, the correlation between the public nature of the Internet and self-consciousness is highlighted.
