Conducting choirs for love
Jennifer Tham graduated from the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, majoring in philosophy and sociology. In 1995, she returned to Singapore and introduced a new direction for the SYC Ensemble Singers. Under her leadership, the choir has excelled at several international choral festivals. Now, she is one of the most established players in the local choral singing scene, having been the volunteer director of the amateur group Singapore Youth Choir.
Artistic freedom fighter
Thirunalan Sasitharan was also a student from the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences in the 1980s. He has been an actor, artistic director of the experimental arts venue The Substation in Armenian Street and art critic at The Straits Times. Even though he has worn many hats in his 30 year career in the arts, he said “I feel very humble and honored and privileged” when he received the Cultural Medallion.
