Successful ageing requires family and social support
April 8, 2014
Recently, a multidisciplinary team that included A/P Paulin Straughan from the Department of Sociology at the National University of Singapore, and scholars from Shanghai University and the Korea Institute for Health and Social Affairs, conducted a cross-cultural comparison of cities facing similar ageing issues as Singapore. They found that family and friends contributed to seniors looking after their own health and going for screenings. Unfortunately, “social isolates” who lacked support from some social networks paid less attention to their health and showed poor screening attendance.
