Attaining historical consciousness in understanding Singapore’s past

In an opinion piece for The Straits Times (15 September 2014), Prof Tan Tai Yong (FASS History Dept & Institute of South Asian Studies) emphasizes the importance of pluralising history beyond the realm of politics. He advocates the need for Singaporeans to attain historical consciousness which can in turn prove constructive for fostering national identity and belonging. Prof Tan suggests that concerted steps to building this nuanced understanding of Singapore’s past should be enacted through schools, self-discovery, as well as amongst family and community.
