The Straits Times (5 September 2014) featured NUS faculty members, Dr. Imran Tajudeen (Dept. of Architecture) and Dr. Mohamed Effendy (FASS Dept. of Southeast Asian Studies), and their team of heritage researchers from Nusantara Consultancy.

The tram explored a little-known Muslim cemetery in Kampong Glam which could hold secrets of 19th century Singapore. It was the focus of a study commissioned by the National Heritage Board (NHB) to help “uncover Singapore’s connection to the Malay world”, according to board’s group director of policy, Mr Alvin Tan. Spending hours on site from December 2013 to May 2014, the team marked out the graves for documentation. They found, among other things, inscriptions written in multiple scripts such as Arabic, Malay, Javanese Aksara, Bugis Aksara, Gujarati, English, and Chinese.
