First non-Chinese to head FASS Chinese Studies department

Professor Kenneth Dean (FASS Chinese Studies) has been appointed the head of the Chinese Studies department, becoming the first non-Chinese to do so in the history of the department. A fluent Mandarin speaker, Professor Dean, whose interest interests include Chinese religions and local temples, will take up the post in January. He desires to teach students how to read tablet inscriptions and interview temple management staff, so that they can understand the temple community, culture and its religious functions.
