How will Singapore maintain its status of being a highly attractive tourist destination?
Assistant Professor Sin Harng Luh (NUS Department of Geography) suggests that Singapore should take a step forward and be redirected away from new and grand redevelopment tourism projects. In recent years, the Singapore Tourism Board has been introducing new infrastructures to the local landscape, such as the Marina Bay Sands, Resorts World Sentosa, and Gardens by the Bay. Coupled with exciting events, such as the annual F1 races, monthly marathons and Bayfront carnivals, these plans have brought life to Singapore’s booming tourism industry. However, given Singapore’s geographical restrictions, there may be a limit to the number of huge projects it can offer. Therefore, future efforts can work towards the provision of personalised and holistic tourism experiences that are unique for individuals. To determine tourist preferences, the Singapore Tourism Analytics Network should consciously analyse trends and data to avoid overgeneralising. Referencing technologies utilised by China’s Alibaba company, software that integrates artificial intelligence can be introduced into Singapore’s tourism industry to account for an individual’s preferences whilst enhancing the security and privacy of an individual traveller.
