We are pleased to announce that the book Seven Hundred Years: A History of Singapore (Marshall Cavendish, 2019) has won second prize in the English (Adult) category at the Popular Readers’ Choice Awards on 7 December 2019. The award, now in its eighth year, aims to recognise local authors, with winners selected based on a public vote from Aug 16 to Oct 27.

Seven Hundred Years: A History of Singapore was launched as part of Singapore’s bicentennial commemoration in 2019 and it comprises of 30 to 40 years of collective research by its four writers – Professor Tan Tai Yong, Associate Professor Peter Borschberg, and Honorary Adjunct Associate Professor Kwa Chong Guan from the NUS Department of History, as well as Professor Derek Heng from the Northern Arizona University Department of History. The book has helped widened historical perspectives on Singapore’s long history and challenged the notion of pre-1819 Singapore as a sleepy and historically insignificant fishing village.
