On 17 February 2020, Associate Professor Peter Borschberg (NUS History) addressed the fellows and members of the Royal Geographical Society-Institute of British Geographers (RGS-IBG) on the topic of “Singapore’s Longer History”.

Most visitors to Singapore will know about Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles and how he established a British trading post on the island in 1819. There is limited knowledge and information about Singapore’s history before that. A/P Borschberg’s lecture demonstrated that Singapore had a much deeper history that existed pre-1819. Singapore’s strategic location and potential as a trading hub was identified long before Raffles arrived. Singapore also fulfilled different roles and functions for various establishments across the centuries.

The session was chaired by the President of RGS-IBG, Rt Hon. Baroness Lynda Chalker and attended by about 850 people at the Ondaatje Lecture Theatre in London. We congratulate A/P Borschberg on his successful and informative presentation.
