Malaysian Crossings: Place and Language in the Worlding of Modern Chinese Literature

August 12, 2022

The Department of Chinese Studies and the Singapore Research Nexus at the NUS Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences will be jointly launching the book Malaysian Crossings: Place and Language in the Worlding of Modern Chinese Literature by Assistant Professor Chan Cheow Thia (NUS Chinese Studies) on November 26, 2022 (1:55 – 4:30 PM) at The Pod, Level 16 of the National Library.

In Malaysian Crossings: Place and Language in the Worlding of Modern Chinese Literature (Columbia University Press, Dec 2022) Dr Chan discusses the unique role of Malaysian Chinese literature (Mahua literature) in Chinese literature. Being clearly aware of their marginalised position in Chinese literature, Mahua literature writers embrace diversity of culture and ideas and manifest globality in their writings. Dr Chan also proposes the overarching concept of ‘Malaysian crossings’ to describe the development of Mahua literature.
