Internationalising Higher Education in the Asia Pacific: Cases of Australia, Japan, and Singapore

August 19, 2022

In May 2022, the British government announced its new High Potential visa scheme, which allows recent graduates from Singapore’s top two universities to head to the UK to look for jobs. Indeed, internationalization has always been one of the key focuses of Singapore’s higher education.

In his new book, Internationalising Higher Education in the Asia Pacific: Cases of Australia, Japan, and Singapore (World Scientific, 2022), Associate Professor Teofilo C. Daquila (NUS Southeast Asian Studies) examines the extent of internationalisation of higher education in Asia Pacific, paying attention particularly to leading universities in Australia, Singapore, and Japan.

Besides holding a professorship at NUS, A/P Daquila has many years of experience as an international student, educator, and scholar in the Philippines, Australia, Japan, and many other countries. In his research, A/P Daquila observed that Singapore, together with Japan and Australia, has been active in liberalising and deepening internationalisation of their higher education over the years. Universities have also been working towards diversifying the courses they offer. NUS was also featured as one of the three case studies for internationalisation strategies adopted by the world’s leading universities.

The study of internationalisation of higher education has become a pertinent research and policy issue for universities and governments over the world as countries seek to embrace globalization and build more interconnected economies.
