Introduction to Singapore Ageing: Issues and Challenges Ahead
July 27, 2023
Emeritus Professor S. Vasoo (NUS Social Work) examines the pertinent issues regarding ageing in Singapore in the introduction of the book, Singapore Ageing: Issues and Challenges Ahead (World Scientific, 2023), which he co-edited alongside Associate Professor Srinivasan Chokkanathan (NUS Social Work) and Associate Professor Bilveer Singh (NUS Political Science). Drawing on contributions from social service practitioners, gerontology researchers, and academics, he outlines the complex social, political, and healthcare implications of Singapore’s rapidly ageing society.
As Singapore grapples with the reality of an ageing workforce, it faces a multitude of challenges that demand foresight from social policy makers. The changing demands on social and economic resources may impact Singapore’s standard of living, making it crucial to find sustainable solutions.
Prof. Vasoo advocates for a shift towards productive ageing, valuing and engaging the elderly in meaningful work rather than perceiving them as economic liabilities. He proposes a re-evaluation of the concept of retirement, recognizing that tomorrow’s elderly will possess valuable knowledge and expertise, and so are still capable of making significant contributions to society.
Prof. Vasoo also accounts for the social impacts of an ageing population, and raises concerns regarding the mental wellbeing of the elderly. He highlights the importance of social support and community care services in combating elderly loneliness and preventing cognitive decline among our elderly population.
Overall, Prof. Vasoo underscores the urgency of addressing resource allocation and social policies in light of Singapore’s rapidly ageing population. By delving into these challenges, he suggests that society can gain a deeper understanding of the complexities surrounding ageing and inspire innovative solutions tailored to the unique needs of Singapore’s elderly.
