Celebrating Singapore Studies: Sixty Years of Nationhood | Looking Back, Moving Forward Video Series – Episode 4: Studying Today, Shaping Tomorrow

October 20, 2025

As part of our ‘Celebrating Singapore Studies: Sixty Years of Nationhood’ campaign for SG60, we present the ‘Looking Back, Moving Forward’ video series — inviting reflection on how Singapore’s past shapes its future.

Through the work of NUS FASS researchers, the series uncovers the complexities behind the nation’s celebrated ‘success story’, bringing to light the inequalities, contradictions, and costs often overlooked.

The fourth video, ‘Studying Today, Shaping Tomorrow’, explores how studying Singapore helps us think ahead about the challenges—and possibilities—of tomorrow.

Research by FASS faculty and students illustrates how social inquiry can prepare us for a future shaped by demographic change, new technologies, and evolving civic life.

Looking closely at Singapore today is, in this way, also a way of anticipating the Singapore we want to build for the next generation.
