Celebrating Singapore Studies: A Vibrant Semester of Reflection as Singapore Turns 60!
December 23, 2025
This semester, our “Celebrating Singapore Studies: Sixty Years of Nationhood” campaign has been bringing NUS FASS research alive through thought-provoking events and a brand new video series that looks beyond the official success story to the everyday lives, contradictions, and hopes that truly shape Singapore.
Here’s a quick recap of what we’ve enjoyed together so far:
Three exciting events this semester
Researchers from NUS Psychology and NUS Social Work unpacked how digital life, AI, and mental health intersect in today’s Singapore. Video recording now available here.
A beautiful and informative documentary and book, and a lively discussion on the roadside shrines and sacred spaces that quietly knit Singapore’s communities together. You may obtain a copy of the book here.
Four fascinating projects on Chinese medicine in Singapore, prewar Japanese life on Middle Road, Singapore fashion histories, and Chinatown’s old shophouses, all supported by the National Heritage Board’s Heritage Research Grant. Video recording now available here.
“Looking Back, Moving Forward” Video Series – all five episodes now out!
Each episode spotlights recent humanities and social science research on Singapore at FASS, revealing the inequalities, creativity, and quiet resilience that official narratives often miss, while asking: what kind of Singapore do we want to build next?
Thank you to everyone who joined us in person, on Zoom, or online this semester, your questions, feedback, and enthusiasm make Singapore Studies feel alive and urgent. More conversations on labour, migration, society, culture, history, and inclusive futures coming soon!
