Making S’pore a more elder-friendly place

Making S’pore a more elder-friendly place

October 11, 2012

The STRAITS TIMES reported that experts were participating in a discussion on “Aging-in-place:how prepared are we?” held at the National University of Singapore on 9 October , 2012. A/P Chia Ngee Choon claimed that the Government should allow the elderly to sublet part or all of their flats, while A/P Paulin Straughan preferred giving the elderly the option of moving into retirement villages. Meanwhile, A/P Angelique Chan put emphasis on the importance of medical conditions, as good medical conditions help the elderly to keep fit in their sunset years. In opening the session, Dr Amy Khor, Minister of State for Health and Manpower, put forward the “4Ps”–philosophy, physical environment, policies, and people, among which the last “P” is the most important, because Singaporeans’ attitudes towards the elderly are closely associated with the outcomes of public policy.
