Presented by NUS Libraries and the Singapore Research Nexus
Venue: FASS RD Seminar Room (AS7 Shaw Foundation Building, level 6, room 42)
Date & Time: 9:00am-12:45pm on May 21st, Wednesday
As an academic, are you frustrated with journal paywalls that limit readers’ access to your work? Do you want to provide open access without violating copyright? NUS ScholarBank may be the answer! Find out how you can use this repository to reach out to a wider audience and raise your research visibility. Learn about the inner workings of citation metrics such as Google Scholar. Sign up for this workshop, organized especially with the needs of FASS faculty members in mind. Please RSVP to nexus@nus.edu.sg (fasbox37@nus.edu.sg) by Friday, May 9th. You may also download the flyer here.
The topics for the workshop are as follows:
Part One: Increasing your research visibility
Research has shown that open access increases the visibility of publications and potentially, the number of citations. This session aims to introduce the different open access options available to authors from the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. It will also introduce Scholarbank@NUS, the repository for scholarly publications of the National University of Singapore, and show you how you can self- archive your publications for dissemination to the world and future generations.
Part Two: Assessing your research impacts
Google Scholar is a highly popular tool used by graduate students and faculty to search for academic literature. It has also come into contention as a bibliometric tool similar to established databases like Web of Science and Scopus. However, because Google has remained mostly silent about its inner workings, little is known about this tool. In this session, the NUS Librarian will share with you what little is known about Google Scholar and how it affects the citation metrics you will obtain from it.
