Existing policies that tackle homelessness must be improved – but how?
Dr Neo Yu Wei, Research Fellow from the Social Service Research Centre at NUS Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, and Assistant Professor Ng Kok Hoe from the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy at NUS tackle this question. Their findings show that many homeless people today do not have any meaningful alternatives to ‘rough sleeping’ due to several factors.
Among these are a lack of diverse housing choices for the economically vulnerable, and existing policy assumptions not reflecting the complex challenges that homeless people face – a state of affairs that the article argues should be reversed by increasing engagement with the homeless in order to tailor policy to suit their multifarious challenges.
