June 14, 2019
We are pleased to announce that the book Seven Hundred Years: A History of Singapore (Marshall Cavendish, 2019), co-authored by Professor Tan Tai Yong, Associate Professor Peter Borschberg, Honorary Adjunct Associate Professor Kwa Chong Guan, all from the NUS Department of History, and Associate Professor Derek Heng (Yale-NUS), has been listed on 11 June 2019 as one of the top ten bestselling books on the Straits Times Non-Fiction list.
Seven Hundred Years: A History of Singapore celebrates the 10th anniversary of the book Singapore: A 700-Year History, updating it with more recent research. It debunks the myth that Singapore was a sleepy and insignificant little fishing village that served as a resting port for pirates. Drawing on a wide range of archival, textual, and cartographical records, as well as the latest discoveries surrounding the history of Singapore, the authors outline the historical trajectory of Singapore pre-1819, before the arrival of Sir Stamford Raffles.
