Domestic workers in Singapore face a host of challenges ranging from homesickness, a lack of social support to exploitative employers. A group of them have recently joined the effort to create a new campaign aimed at changing perceptions and raising awareness of the plight of maids here.<\/p>\n

Conceived by researchers at NUS’s Centre for Culture-Centred Approach to Research and Evaluation (CARE), the campaign involves these domestic workers in the shaping of its direction and execution. Professor Mohan Dutta (FASS CNM) believes that by inverting the communication structure and giving the disenfranchised a voice in shaping the campaign, one will be able to get to the core of these problems and also give them a voice in shaping solutions.<\/p>\n

Aside from participating in this campaign, these domestic workers have also taken up photography as a form of an empowerment tool. They gather every Sunday morning to catch up with one another through photographs and videos taken throughout the week with the workers\u2019 smartphones or with cameras loaned from CARE.<\/p>\n
